Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur keeping tabs on Inter Milan centre-back Stefan De Vrij

According to Ekrem Konur (h/t ESPN), Tottenham Hotspur are planning to make a move for Inter Milan centre-back Stefan De Vrij. He previously played under Antonio Conte during their time together at the San Siro.

De Vrij will enter the final year of his current deal at Inter next summer. Conte is monitoring the situation to see if an opportunity would arise for Spurs to make their move. If a renewal is not agreed upon in the coming months, Tottenham could potentially swoop in and land him on the cheap.

Whether Spurs would make their move this month or at the end of the season will only be known in due time. But what is guaranteed is that the Dutchman would be an excellent addition to the squad, considering how he could easily slot into Conte’s back three.

Spurs to move for De Vrij?

If there is a chance that Tottenham can sign the 29-year-old, then we should not show any hesitation and try to get the deal over the line. Even if he is going to enter the twilight of his playing career, the Dutchman has shown no signs of any decline and could prove to be a reliable presence at the back.

Already familiar with Conte’s system, the Inter superstar could instantly slot into our backline and become a commanding presence. Even if the defence has been solid overall in the absence of Cristian Romero, they still need additions to compete at the top level on a weekly basis.

Our defensive depth isn’t much compared to that of our rivals in the Premier League. Strength in depth is needed if we are serious about challenging for the title.

Whether the Dutch international would be open to moving to N17 or not needs to be seen in the coming months. The Nerazzurri are currently mounting their Serie A title defence and it will come as a surprise if they allow him to depart in the winter transfer window.

Since the Spurs boss has managed the Serie A defender before, it would not be too much of a reach to say that it could give us an upper hand should an opportunity arise. Until then, we would have to keep a close eye on the situation to see how it develops.
