Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn’s transfer to Ajax in doubt after Leicester City display

According to the transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Ajax Amsterdam’s efforts to sign Tottenham Hotspur attacker Steven Bergwijn could be put in doubt following his excellent performance against Leicester City in the Premier League.

Spurs were seconds away from a defeat but Bergwijn worked his magic to not only equalize but also win the game for his side in stoppage time. The three points have kept Tottenham firmly in the race to challenge for the top four.

Erik Ten Hag’s side have shown an interest to secure the services of Bergwijn as they officially put in bids to make their case. They made two offers in the past few days, but both of them was refuted by Tottenham.

Ajax face complications in pursuit of Steven Bergwijn.

Spurs made it clear that they wanted more than €15million for the Dutchman, but that could further be complicated by his recent display. It remains to be seen how this situation would pan out in the coming days as the end of the January transfer window is just around the corner.

A player reborn?

We cannot afford to lose the 24-year-old looking at how good he was against the Foxes yesterday. This viewpoint is not reactionary as he has been doing well before an injury halted his progress under Antonio Conte.

The Tottenham winger’s performance against West Ham United in the Carabao Cup quarter-final is another example of how he has been good even before the previous match. Which makes it all the more baffling that the North London club were entertaining offers for him.

Our lack of depth in the attacking front is clear for all to see. Unless we can get an irrefutable offer and use that money to bring in reinforcements, the idea of selling Bergwijn seems stupid.

Since there are just a few days left in this month’s transfer market, the chances of that happening are diminishing with each passing day. Son Heung-Min is currently out injured, which makes it even more questionable why the club is looking to go down this route.

Let’s hope that the club takes a reasonable decision by not shooting themselves in the foot by reducing the already thin frontline.
