Transfer News: Torino lead Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Cagliari star Nahitan Nandez
According to transfer news on Italian news outlet Calciomercato (h/t ESPN), Torino are leading the race to sign Cagliari star Nahitan Nandez amidst interest from Tottenham Hotspur. He has been a leading presence for a side that is struggling to survive the drop for two seasons in a row.
Nandez is looking likely to leave his current club, and Tottenham are one of the interested parties who want to get his services. He was hopeful of signing up for a team where he could experience playing in the UEFA Champions League, but that may not be possible if he joins Torino.
They are 10th in the table and currently trail 4th-placed Atalanta by 11 points. The Sardinia-based side would need a big change in fortune if they want to taste UCL football for the first time since the competition was rebranded some three decades back. Spurs, meanwhile, are 2 points off fourth-placed Manchester United, who have played three games more than us up until now.
Toro could be the next destination for the Uruguayan, which is a jump up from his club’s current state but they are still not the heavyweights in the Italian league. He is also on the radar of Inter Milan and Napoli but it seems that it is the Turin-based outfit that is the closest to signing him.
Spurs holding back?
Primarily a right-sided midfielder, the 26-year-old would have been useful for us in the right wing-back role, considering how astute he is in both phases of the game. Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal have been disappointing in their own ways and Nandez could have offered something new, although it remains unclear what Conte’s plan is for him if Spurs are to ever sign the Uruguayan.
Nandez also dabbles in central midfield from time to time but it is on the right flank where he really comes into his own. One would have thought that Spurs would be able to offer a more exciting project as compared to Torino, and it remains to be seen just why they are the ones touted to be the frontrunners at this time.
Our interest in Adama Traore could cushion some of the blow if we are to miss out on Nandez in the coming days. Traore is seen as an option in the right wing-back slot, which does make sense, considering how Antonio Conte has used Victor Moses and Ivan Perisic in similar roles at Chelsea and Inter Milan respectively.

It remains to be seen what will be the outcome of this situation as the deadline day is on the horizon. Traore is certainly tested in the Premier League and has bags of experience with Wolverhampton Wanderers. If we do manage to get either of them before February, fans wouldn’t really have a lot to complain about regarding our signings down the right-hand side.
