Transfer News: Porto reject £37.6m bid from Tottenham Hotspur for winger Luis Díaz
According to the Guardian, Tottenham Hotspur saw their opening bid of £37.6m rejected by Porto for Colombian ace Luis Díaz.
Luis Díaz’s incredible performances have taken the Liga Bwin by storm in the last two seasons. After a successful spell in the Copa America tournament last year, the Colombian forward hasn’t slowed down and has bagged 14 goals in 18 league appearances this campaign.
Lately, the left winger’s scintillating performances have attracted some heavy interest from big European clubs, and Tottenham even went ahead and formalized their interest in the 25-year-old star.
Manchester United have also been in the race to sign the winger, who apparently has a release clause of £66m. The Spurs board registered their first bid of €45m (£37.6m), which is believed to be rejected by Porto.
What next for Spurs and Diaz?
We cannot really blame the Portuguese side for rejecting our first offer as it falls way short of the aforementioned release clause. Moreover, it would also mean them losing their main man up front mid-way through the season when they are topping the league table. Two-time European Cup/UEFA Champions League winners, it’s not like Porto are a small club that can be bullied around.
The depth of Tottenham’s front line, meanwhile, is questionable. Jack Clarke and Bryan Gil are arguably not up for regular first-team football, as evidenced by their lack of playing time in the PL. Son Heung-min’s injury exposed our lack of options on the left flank, while Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Mora have been played down the middle of the attack in recent weeks by Conte.
Luis Díaz can be a viable addition to our attacking contingent. However, we have to generate the required funds for the transfer as it is clear the Portuguese side weren’t really impressed with our initial offer.
At 25, his best years are here and he is entering the peak of his career. It would be beneficial if those years unfold at N17 rather than any place else. The release clause isn’t the cheapest but our board would have to do better if they plan to make a second offer.

With just a few days left in the transfer window, it remains to be seen if we can get our man. With Dele Alli, Tanguy Ndombele, and Giovani Lo Celso linked with an exit, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to generate some funds from there and potentially put it towards Diaz. Time is running out fast though, so Fabio Paratici and co must hurry up if they want the Colombian at N17.
