Transfer News: Southampton are interested in loaning Tottenham Hotspur star Dele Alli
According to The Telegraph (Subscription Required), Southampton have shown an interest in a loan deal involving Tottenham Hotspur star Dele Alli, while Brighton and Hove Albion continue to watch the situation.
Dele Alli has experienced a rapid drop in form in the last two seasons. The midfielder started the campaign showing promise under Nuno Espírito Santo. However, he failed to impress and fell down the pecking order once again.
The ex-MK Dons man also failed to capitalize on the chances provided by Antonio Conte and is now seriously struggling for consistent starts at N17. A force to reckon with under Mauricio Pochettino, Alli has certainly failed to live up to the promise he showed early on in his career.
It’s becoming increasingly clear that the English star isn’t proving to be much of a help to our Italian manager. He has severely struggled for playing time and was unimpressive when handed the chance to take the field- notably against Liverpool in the 2-2 draw. The Telegraph also claim that the manager wants to offload him this week.
What next for Alli?
If that’s the case, the number of parties interested in Alli would come as good news to our club’s board. It is believed that Southampton are in the race to sign the out-of-favour midfielder on a loan deal, whereas Brighton & Hove Albion director Dan Ashworth has also kept a tab on the situation.
Considering his 67 goals and 61 assists in 269 appearances, his Tottenham career hasn’t been a total disappointment. However, he had many chances to get his career back on track but failed to do so. A spell away from Spurs may just be what the doctor ordered for him to rejuvenate his career.
It remains to be seen if the Saints have the financial backing to meet the £100,000-a-week salary of the English star. If they agree on that, then it would be a bonus for us to have a hefty amount off our books, especially considering Alli isn’t really an important first-team player anymore.

Southampton and Brighton are both stable PL clubs that are more or less safe from being relegated after having an impressive season so far. Graham Potter’s men are 9th in the table while the Saints are 12th.
Alli can certainly find a space for himself in their first-team set-up and playing freely without the pressure of putting on the Spurs shirt could help him get his confidence back. But for that, a move would have to take place and with less than a week left in the January window, it remains to be seen what comes of this story.
