Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur star Nile John joins Charlton Athletic on season-long loan deal
According to the club’s official website, Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement with Charlton Athletic for a season-long loan transfer of Nile John. The teenager will now have an opportunity to gain senior minutes at the League One side.
John was a regular in the Spurs U23 set up of the Development Squad before the loan deal was approved. He will now have the opportunity to test himself at a higher level and continue his development in a competitive setup.
The 18-year-old had already debuted for the first team and had garnered two appearances, both on the European front. Moreover, the loan could not come at a perfect time as the young starlet was getting too good for the youth division and needed a stronger challenge.
One for the future?
The Englishman had featured 14 times in the Premier League 2 division while scoring seven goals and assisting thrice in the process. Mostly used as an attacking midfielder this season; he is primarily a central midfielder whose versatility certainly adds to his long list of abilities.
The teenager would have a favourable environment at Charlton due to the support from Chris Powell, who is the club’s head of coaching at the Spurs’ academy. The 52-year-old represented Charlton for eight years as a player, spread across three spells. His connections with the League One club helped facilitate the move to The Valley.
Moreover, the youngster would also have Johnnie Jackson to help in his development in the League One division. Jackson played a role in assisting the progression of several high profile prospects, with Conor Gallager of Chelsea being one such example. Gallager is now excelling at Crystal Palace on loan under the guidance of Patrick Vieira.

Even if we have not made any signings in the first team department, it is at least good to know that the youth system is looked after well at this point. We hope that the English starlet would have a future with us, unlike what happened with Dilan Markanday.
John will hopefully make the most of this opportunity and come out of the experience a better player.
