Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur prepare bid for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz
According to Daily Mail Online, Tottenham Hotspur are preparing a bid for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz before the January transfer window closes this Monday. They have not made any signings this window despite the need for it across multiple areas.
Tottenham are planning to offer £32million in transfer fees to Villa for the services of Luiz. He will enter the final year of his contract next summer, which could make him an achievable prospect for Spurs this month.
However, much to the North London club’s disappointment, Steven Gerrard wants to keep hold of the Brazilian at all costs, which could dent their chances of signing him. His side is also in the market for another midfielder, and they saw a £20million offer rejected by Juventus for Rodrigo Bentancur.
Antonio Conte’s side also attempted to get Bentancur on a loan transfer but they ran into a roadblock after Juve rejected their attempt. It remains to be seen if potentially securing Bentancur will change Gerrard’s mind regarding Luiz.
Who is Douglas Luiz?
The 23-year-old serves primarily as a defensive midfielder but can also play slightly up in central midfield when needed. The Brazilian star is purely a midfield destroyer and is excellent in reading the play and stopping opposition attacks in its tracks.
The Villa star is not too shabby with his technical skills and can pick out teammates across long distances. He can also chip in with some goals from midfield, which was something Conte’s midfielders used to do at Inter Milan. He has featured in 17 Premier League matches this season and has netted three times for Villa.
We could use someone like the Brazil international in our team, but the Liverpool legend’s stance could prove to be a thorn in our pursuit of signing him. With not many days left before the January transfer window closes, it is now a race against time to get the deal over the line.

If Fabio Paratici can do that and ask the PL midfielder to force his way out, we may have a chance to land him this month. Another possibility is how we put in an irrefutable offer that the Lions simply cannot refuse. We could also have a chance if they do end up signing another midfielder in the coming days.
But all these scenarios would depend on whether the Reds legend’s stance can be influenced at all in the first place. So we should have other targets in mind to be safe, or we may end up with nothing in the bag.
