Fabrizio Romano: Sevilla defender Diego Carlos not a transfer target for Tottenham Hotspur
According to the transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Tottenham Hotspur have not identified Sevilla defender Diego Carlos as a transfer target this January. He has been sensational this season while leading from the back to help his side to compete for the La Liga title.
Carlos was linked with a move to join Tottenham ahead of Monday’s deadline, but Romano has denounced those claims. He stated that the centre-back is not on the shortlist at this instant while also conveying that the Spanish club considers him “untouchable”.
Julen Loptegui’s side have done well this season, and Carlos has played a key role in their success. There are no proposals in the form of a cash offer or even an exchange deal, further proving that the Spurs links were false.
Not a blow?
The 28-year-old has played in 30 matches this season and has helped Sevilla keep 14 clean sheets across all competitions. The central defender has been a commanding presence at the back alongside Jules Kounde, which has seen them compete against Real Madrid for the league title.
However, despite the La Liga star’s quality, we are not massively affected by this update since our priorities lie elsewhere. Centre-back is not an area where we are desperate for additions when the midfield and attack are in need of bolstering.
Joe Rodon, for example, failed to get regular minutes under his belt when Eric Dier and Cristian Romero were out on the sidelines. Now the latter duo is close to returning, indicating that we do not need to splurge on another player in the position.
In terms of our midfield, Giovani Lo Celso, Dele Alli and Tanguy Ndomele were all left out of the last matchday squad by Antonio Conte. Given their prior performances, there was little for them in terms of making a case to be included.

Our situation in the attacking department is just as bad, if not worse, due to the lack of adequate alternatives. Harry Kane does not have any backup, while the situation on the wings is slightly better.
Bryan Gil and Lucas Moura cannot be counted on regularly, leaving us with just Son Heung-Min as a left-winger. So Steven Bergwijn had to deputise on both sides to meet the lack of enough depth. Time will tell if we would make a late signing this January.
