Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks was offered to Leeds United in January
According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Leeds United was offered the opportunity to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks in the January transfer window. This news is shocking considering how he has been one of the most reliable options for Antonio Conte this season.
A deal for Winks was proposed to Leeds on a loan transfer last month, but it was only the intermediaries who made the offer. Marcelo Bielsa rejected the proposal to sign him despite having the financial capacity to finalise a move. He believed the midfielder lacks the right profile to suit his system.
However, any move was unlikely to happen since the Whites had already rejected the Englishman once the previous summer. He was not alone in that proposal as Donny van de Beek from Manchester United was also in the mix.
Huh? Really?
It would have been a puzzling sight to see the club allowing the 25-year-old to leave, especially after Conte expressed his faith in the central midfielder. This reveal was before the winter transfer window had even opened and it is difficult to understand why the intermediaries even made such an attempt.
Even if Bielsa had accepted the offer, it would have been difficult to see the Tottenham star move out in January. After all, there were others in midfield who were underperforming, like Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Dele Alli who were all on the chopping block.
The underperforming trio all left N17 elsewhere in search of kickstarting their stagnated careers. Ndombele returned to Olympique Lyon, Alli joined Everton, and Lo Celso moved to Villarreal.

In such circumstances, it would not have made sense for us to part ways with the England international when he was a crucial part of the team. With a long season still left ahead of us, he is bound to have an important role in our attempt to qualify for the Champions League next term.
The Spurs star, along with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp, have been carrying our midfield under the 52-year-old manager. So we are bound to see more of him in the future regardless of the arrival of Rodrigo Bentancur. Let’s hope that all four of them can contribute to our success in the remainder of this season.
