Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur sign Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus on deadline day
According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur have signed Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus on deadline day of the January transfer window. He would be hoping to take advantage of this change of scenario to have a fresh start away from Turin.
Tottenham have parted ways with €19million in transfer fees to acquire the services of Bentancur. The deal also includes an add-on clause where €6million would have to be paid if certain criteria are met in the future.
The 24-year-old has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with Spurs, who have beaten Aston Villa for his signature in the process. The latter saw their £20.5million offer get refuted by the Serie A club, paving the way for the North London side to jump in and take advantage.
A good signing?
The Uruguayan has been a regular at the Allianz Stadium and for his national side in the past few years. He could still take his game to another level and in Antonio Conte, he will have a top-quality coach who can help him do just that. We have already experienced that first hand with Oliver Skipp, for example.
The South American is a proper box-to-box midfielder who has the quality to instantly become one of our starting midfielders. The former Boca Juniors man would also add an important amount of depth in our midfield, especially with Dele Alli, Tanguy Ndombele, and Giovani Lo Celso leaving N17 yesterday- the latter two on a loan spell.
The Uruguay international still has a lot of years left in his playing career and hence, has more than enough time to repay what we paid for his signature. The transfer fee is not overly exorbitant, plus the add-ons would only have to be incurred if certain clauses are met in the future.
The central midfielder’s long-term contract would also suit the project we are building under the 52-year-old coach, but it is peculiar that the manager’s deal itself expires in the summer of 2023. Nevertheless, we needed a change in our midfield, so his arrival would certainly help us in that regard.

Bentancur enjoyed a good spell at Juventus- a club that Conte knows very well, having played and managed them earlier in his career. However, the Uruguayan never played under the Italian boss, and it remains to be seen how the duo fares together in the Premier League.
This is certainly a very astute piece of business done by the club on deadline day. It would have been a nightmare scenario loaning out a bunch of midfielders and continuing this campaign without replacing at least one of them.
