Tottenham Hotspur loanee Tanguy Ndombele makes Paris Saint-Germain transfer admission

In an interview with Julien Maynard at Telefoot (h/t football.london), Tottenham Hotspur loanee Tanguy Ndombele spoke about nearly joining Paris Saint-Germain during the January transfer window.

The Frenchman eventually re-joined Olympique Lyonnais on loan until the end of the season, as Spurs manager Antonio Conte deemed him surplus to requirements. The midfield star has not enjoyed a great time at Tottenham ever since he swapped Lyon for Spurs in 2019.

The winter transfer window saw the France international come close to joining PSG on loan, but it failed to become a reality as the deal broke down in the final stages of negotiations.

“It is true that I was associated with PSG, there were discussions. But between the discussions and the act, there is a long way. It was complicated with Paris for an exchange, they made it clear to me after a while.”

Still keen on securing a move away from Spurs, Ndombele managed to secure a temporary loan deal with former side Lyon, which will see him stay with the Ligue 1 club until the end of the season.

PSG future kept open

Despite being a highly-rated midfielder, the player has had a torrid time in north London, with his last game for the club resulting in a performance so bad that Spurs fans began to boo him as he exited the field. His slow walk towards the dugout may have been the tipping point for the boos to ensue from our fans, but his performance on the pitch did not help his case at all.

There seemed to be no future at Tottenham for the Frenchman after this incident, and the Spurs star was close to moving to PSG on a loan deal, which did not materialise in the end. However, the player has not ruled out a move to the Parc des Princes in the future.

“I listened and I respect Paris’ decision, I couldn’t do otherwise. A part of fate? Yes, maybe I shouldn’t go, maybe in the future, someday, I don’t know.”

Though it looked like Ndombele was out of depth at Spurs for quite some time now, this window seems like the one which has really sealed his fate at the club. Antonio Conte came in on a short contract until 2023 and he is one man who does not want to waste any time here.

A return to his native France is expected to see the midfielder gain some regular minutes and get back to the form that everyone saw from him while at Lyon. However, it is anyone’s guess if the player returns to England in the summer and decides to stick it out with Spurs for yet another year.

Conte seems to have made his mind up about Ndombele, with the player hardly getting any games under the Italian boss during his tenure at the club. His aforementioned comments about opening a move back to PSG however, seem to indicate that the 25-year-old sees his future elsewhere.

Playing for the French juggernauts is an ideal proposition for Ndombele, who would not only be playing in familiar territory in Ligue 1 but also reuniting with Mauricio Pochettino- the man who brought him to Spurs all the way back in 2019.
