Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero ruled out of action for three-four weeks.

Paul Robinson believes Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero is a phenomenal player

Speaking to Football Insider (h/t football.london), former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson was full of praise for defender Cristian Romero following his display in the FA Cup fourth-round win against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Spurs put the Seagulls to the sword in a convincing display, winning comfortably against a side that is riding high in the Premier League and causing a few upsets against giants of the English top-flight.

The match marked Romero’s long-awaited return from injury, as the Argentine put in a fabulous defensive display to help his side to an easy victory. Robinson, who won the League Cup with Spurs, lauded the defender for his performance on the pitch and added that the 23-year-old makes other players around him better.

“His performance [on Saturday] proved that he is the best centre-half at the club. I think they probably tried to get one in during the window but it did not work out. But in Romero, they have got a phenomenal defender. He makes others around him better.”

The Spurs defender did not show any signs of rustiness during the game despite making his first appearance in nearly four months after a hamstring injury suffered while on international duty. This augurs well for Tottenham heading into the business end of the season.

Champions League quality

Romero was signed in the summer after an excellent season with Atalanta that saw him named Serie A’s Best Defender for the 2020/21 season. The centre-back has only continued his fine form in England, looking like one of Spurs’ better defenders despite having spent less than a year with the club.

Robinson believes that Romero is capable of much more, describing the defender as someone who is of Champions League quality. He further urges Spurs to build a team around the player.

“What they have got is not enough. They need more but he is certainly the best that they have got. He could play in any side in the top four of the Premier League. He is a Champions League player, a top player. If Spurs are going to go places, Romero is the type of play they will need to keep and build around.”

Tottenham fans will have been delighted to see their star defender back in action. The Argentine has not seen much game time this season due to his injury troubles. Despite that, he looks to be in top shape and will hopefully continue to star for us for the remainder of the season.

Romero also looked far superior to his fellow defenders on Sunday, as he put in a classy display for supporters to drool over. He is arguably the best defender the club have at the moment, continuing with his fine form from his time in Italy.

Tottenham’s rearguard has looked shaky at times this campaign, and Romero’s void was certainly felt. Manager Antonio Conte will be relieved to have the player back for the second half of the campaign.

Now back with the squad, Conte will hope that Romero stays injury-free for the rest of the campaign as Spurs look to grab their hands on the FA Cup trophy this season. The Argentine made a winning start in a FA Cup game, and hopefully, he can see us through to the summit.
