Tottenham Hotspur dealt transfer blow as Djed Spence has already signed a new contract with Middlesbrough
According to TeessideLive, Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a harsh realisation that Djed Spence had already signed a new contract with Middlesbrough. This piece of information only came to light recently as several clubs vie for his services for a potential future move.
Spence renewed his current deal with Boro before he had left to join Nottingham Forest on a loan in the summer of 2021. His new contract ties him down to the Riverside club until 2024, unlike what the interested parties had previously thought. Earlier it was believed that he will enter the final year of his deal next summer.
Arsenal, Roma and Inter Milan are also monitoring the situation alongside Tottenham in an attempt to prise the 21-year-old’s services. However, this latest update is a hammer blow to their plans to secure him on a cut-price deal at the end of this season.
Another transfer setback?
The Englishman could be in line to leave after this season anyway due to Isaiah Jones’ presence at Boro. There is a chance that he could end up playing with Forest once again, although that is likely to depend on whether they can achieve promotion to the Premier League or not.
Regardless of it, the Championship star would likely be subjected to an increased interest at the end of the season. He would be more expensive due to the new information regarding his contract but could be available nonetheless if Forest’s valuation is met.
Spurs have already watched him recently when they sent scouts to assess the Middlesbrough loanee when he took on Leicester City in the fourth round of the FA Cup. He passed the test with flying colours as his side overthrew the Foxes by a 4-1 scoreline. The fullback had an impressive showing against the defending champions, indicating he could be ready to step up to the first division.

Earlier, the Boro ace had excelled against Mikel Arteta’s side as the Reds beat them 1-0 in the third round of the FA Cup. Having dropped two splendid displays against PL clubs, he has shown the ability to prosper in the top flight for years to come.
The interest from elsewhere further solidifies that point, giving us more reasons to ramp up our efforts to land him. Sure, it will cost us more given the new contract, but we must take an early initiative to prevent a repeat of our transfer failures last month. Whether we can get this deal in the bag or not would only be known in due time.
