Tottenham Hotspur battle Marseille and Galatasaray for Inter Milan midfielder Arturo Vidal

According to El Deportivo (h/t The Sun), Tottenham Hotspur are set to battle it out with Marseille and Galatasaray for Inter Milan midfielder Arturo Vidal. The Chilean could be in line to leave the Guissepe Meazza at the end of the season, paving the way for Spurs to make their move.

Vidal has less than six months left on his current contract with Inter. There is an option to extend the deal by another year, although it is expected that the clause might not be triggered. Antonio Conte is assessing the prospect of signing him ahead of the summer transfer window.

Tottenham will look to make a move in the summer for the 34-year-old. He has previously thought about playing in the Premier League and this could give Spurs the edge when it comes to the transfer race.

Should Spurs target Vidal?

The 34-year-old is well past his prime and he does not possess the same qualities that defined him during his heyday with Juventus and Bayern Munich. This is clearly evident considering how he has been utilised by Simeone Inzaghi throughout this season.

While Vidal has featured 24 times this season, the minutes amount to just 833 in total across all competitions. He has also scored twice while assisting three times during that process. The Chilean’s powers are clearly on the wane and it is something Tottenham should consider before making their move.

However, if we could get the Nerazzurri star on a relatively low wage, he could end up being a good signing in the short term. That means the central midfielder would have to agree to a diminished role just like he is currently doing in Italy.

We did part ways with three midfielders last month, which has reduced our depth to a great extent. Rodrigo Bentancur was brought in from Juventus, but he is not enough to meet the void left by the departures of Dele Alli, Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso.

While the Spurs trio did admittedly leave the club on loan, it remains to be seen whether any of them has a future at the club come next season.

Harry Winks, Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg would undoubtedly be mainstays in our team, but there is a lack of squad players who can be used on a rotational role. The Chilean international would be perfect in such a case. It will be interesting to see how this situation will pan out in the coming months.
