Tottenham Hotspur receive potential transfer boost in their pursuit of Victor Osimhen
Speaking to Football Italia (h/t Express), Napoli forward Victor Osimhen named Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero as the toughest defender he has faced during his career in what is a transfer boost for Spurs for their summer transfer business.
The Napoli forward is one of the most exciting talents in Europe, making his name in France with Lille as a goalscorer, which earned him a move to Serie A. The player is a regular for his national side as well, with the Nigerian leading the line for the team.
When quizzed on the toughest opponent Osimhen has played against over the course of his career, the striker named Spurs’ Romero as his choice.
“Romero, who is now at Tottenham. He was always faster than me every time we faced each other.”
The pair faced off against each other in previous seasons when Romero turned out for his parent club Atalanta. The defender is currently on a season-long loan deal at Tottenham.
Osimhen boost for Spurs
Osimhen’s response will have excited Spurs fans, as manager Antonio Conte is said to have identified the striker as a priority target next season in a bid to bolster his attacking options. The Nigerian has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham since the end of last season.
Currently, Conte only has Harry Kane to rely on as a striker, with Spurs failing to move for a cover for the Englishman as of yet. Kane himself has been having a poor season when compared to his previous campaigns, and a back-up for the England skipper is necessary.
Conte’s keen interest in the Napoli man seems to just have been given a welcome boost after the Nigerian spoke of his admiration for Romero. If all goes well in the summer, Osimhen could line up alongside Romero in the same team.
Aside from Osimhen’s obvious attacking qualities, Conte’s need for a striker in the squad is a necessity more than a priority. Kane is the only senior striker available to the Italian, and he will need all the help he can get if Spurs are to compete for major trophies next season.

Osimhen has turned out to be a proven striker from his time in France and Italy, and Conte’s interest in him suggests that the Nigerian can thrive in England as well. However, it remains to be seen if he is content to play as a second fiddle to Harry Kane.
There is little to suggest that Conte is looking to replace Kane in the upcoming summer transfer window. As a result, Osimhen will either have to play as deputy to Kane or hope that Conte can pair him up with the Englishman to form a deadly striker duo.
