Real Madrid show an emerging interest in signing Tottenham Hotspur defender Sergio Reguilon
According to Mirror (h/t Express), Real Madrid are keen to trigger the buy-back clause and re-sign Tottenham Hotspur wing-back Sergio Reguilon in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The Lilywhites purchased him for a sum of £27m from Real Madrid in 2020 following an excellent loan spell at Sevilla. A certain clause was added to his contract which gave the La Liga club an opportunity to purchase him for a sum of £33.6m before 30th May 2022.
This may seem like an easy profit on an objective level but Reguilon has grown in stature and maturity as a player ever since arriving at N-17. He has started to make the left wing-back position his own and Spurs do not have a lot of options that would have a similar impact should he leave.
With Marcelo set to leave Los Blancos at the end of the season, the 25-year-old is being considered as a replacement for the Brazilian. His previous loan spell at Sevilla saw him play an integral part in that squad which lifted the UEFA Europa League in the 2019-20 season.
Sergio Reguilon and his importance for Tottenham Hotspur
The Spanish wing-back has played a crucial role in the defensive setup at N-17 in the last couple of seasons. He has played 60 games during which time he has scored one goal and provided nine assists for Spurs across all competitions to date.
That being said, the 25-year-old wing-back is more than just a summation of such stats and has managed to keep his position in the starting lineup despite the staggering turnover of coaches in recent times.
Reguilon has looked solid going on the attack for the North Londoners whilst also providing suitable defensive cover whenever needed. Ryan Sessegnon seems to be the only proper replacement in that position but the youngster has struggled to reach the potential that he once displayed with Fulham.
The Spanish international still has a lot to offer and losing him could be a sad reality for the club which seems even more imminent with every passing moment. The North Londoners had a quiet window and weren’t able to land several of their top targets in January.

The loss of another settled defender in Reguilon could only add more woes to Tottenham’s list of growing concerns. Despite all the rumours going around, only the future can tell if the Spaniard remains at N-17 or returns to Real Madrid.
It would still be fair to say that Spurs should be prepared for a life without Reguilon and the coming transfer window could be aimed at bringing in suitable replacements.
