Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte wants his side to adopt winning mentality after loss to Wolves

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte has called on his team to develop a winning mentality, asking his players to become ‘killers’. This comes after Spurs suffered a 2-0 loss at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the league.

The Lilywhites conceded two goals in the first half against Wolves and struggled to get back in the game and score any goals themselves. It marked Conte’s third league loss in a row at north London.

The Italian defined a winning mentality as one that made you ready to kill to live, and asked his players to adopt this approach in order to win games.

“There are players which are more open. Some need more time to understand this. A winning mentality, in my opinion, means I am ready to kill you to live.”

Spurs opened up their defence to Wolves, who grabbed their chances with glee after almost comical mistakes from the Tottenham players at the back. The ever-reliable Hugo Lloris was also at fault for the second goal, running a simple pass astray to his teammate, which set in motion the events that led to Wolves scoring.

Transfer winning mentality

The latest series of losses for Spurs puts them in eighth place, one spot below their latest opponents. Luckily for Conte and his men, they have multiple games in hand to try and make up the deficit.

The former Inter Milan manager said that his team needed to show better desire than the opposition and that the defeat needs to hurt his players a lot, in order to improve in the future.

“The problem is you can’t buy a winning mentality, you can only transfer the winning mentality day by day. It is not sure. In every situation, when you show better desire than your opponent. When you understand that, the defeat has to hurt you a lot – not a little. This is not simple.”

Conte’s side has endured a series of league defeats now, which only hurt their quest to finish in the top four of the Premier League table. Champions League football next season seems to be slipping away from Tottenham’s sight with each passing game.

The last game saw Spurs give up a lead twice to fall to a home defeat, while last night’s game saw them shoot themselves in the foot with silly mistakes that saw them suffer yet another loss at home.

Conte’s words will need to ring true with his players very quickly, as they need to bounce back strong to climb up the table in the coming weeks. Desire and mentality were words he repeatedly used, and the Spurs team need to imbibe these into their game soon.

Their multiple games in hand mean nothing if Conte is unable to pass these traits onto his squad that looks short on confidence and form. Spurs have quality players in their ranks, but it just requires a spark and transferring that winning mentality that the head coach has onto his players.
