Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur express interest in VFB Stuttgart star Borna Sosa
According to Christian Falk of BILD via Twitter (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur have registered their interest in signing VFB Stuttgart left-wing-back Borna Sosa in the upcoming summer transfer window. He has seen himself rise to the top over the past two years or so and could be in line to make a bigger jump in the coming window.
Tottenham are keen on adding Sosa to their squad ahead of the 2022-23 campaign. However, Arsenal are also in the same boat and could pose a heavy threat in our efforts to land the defender. Chelsea, for their part, had assessed the possibility of finalising a transfer in January.
The switch never took place, but it remains to be seen whether they will return for him again next summer. Only time will tell whether they would rekindle their interest or not and put in a transfer bid at the end of this term.
Who is Borna Sosa?
Primarily a left-wingback, the 24-year-old can also play as a left-sided midfielder and a left-back when needed. The defender has also been utilised as a right midfielder, showcasing the versatility he can provide to Antonio Conte if we do end up getting his signature.
The Croatian has been this season as well, continuing his progress from the last campaign. He has featured 20 times this season while scoring twice alongside five assists across all competitions. He had set up his fellow teammates ten times the last term, having played 28 matches across all competitions.
The Bundesliga star has been crucial for club and country since he has reached greater heights in his playing career. While the German side is battling it out in the relegation zone, he has been one of the very few shining lights for them this season. Moreover, if they do drop down to the second division, we could sign him at a cut-price next summer.
The Stuttgart defender has also been important for Croatia in ensuring that they qualified for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. He is renowned for his attacking prowess, especially his ability to pick out a teammate with his crossing skills. That could come in handy as our wingback had been poor with their crossing, which was emphasised by Conte as well.
The Croatian international is also a threat during set-pieces as he can threaten the goalkeepers from long distances while also being able to find his teammates with ease in dead ball situations.

Sergio Reguilon and Ryan Sessegnon have been used as the left wingbacks by Antonio Conte. Both of them have done well, so there is no necessity for immediate additions in that role. Then again, the lack of depth in attack could see Sessegnon shift to the left-wing as he can easily deputise in that role without a reduction in quality.
So we may see a situation where the need for a left wingback could arise next summer. The Bundesliga fullback would do a great job for us if we can prise him away before others get involved.
