Antonio Conte explains how Tottenham Hotspur can compete against Manchester City
Antonio Conte has provided his insight on how Tottenham Hotspur can compete against Manchester City in the Premier League match that will take place later today. This fixture is arguably the toughest challenge that the Spurs boss will face since taking over at N17.
Coming into this game, both teams are in stark contrast to each other in terms of their form. Tottenham have lost their last three league games while Man City continue their march to what looks like another Premier League title.
Speaking in an interview with Spurs TV (h/t Tottenham Hotspur official website), Conte has expressed that Spurs must be “perfect” tactically, defensively and offensively to enjoy a “good result” against the Citizens. He added that they have prepared in all these scenarios, and the players must have the right focus and personality to do what is needed.
“If you want to have a chance of getting a good result you have to be perfect tactically, defensively and offensively. You have to be good without the ball, tactically perfect, and try to be compact and try to be strong. Then, when you have the ball, you have to be good to hurt them. We studied situations that can hurt them, and hope we have the right focus, the right concentration, the right personality to play with the ball and do what we try to do.”
Can Spurs do the near-impossible task?
When we initially drew 2-2 with Liverpool under the Italian, expectations were high and naturally so. However, our poor displays against Chelsea really put us back to reality, which showed the difference in quality between the top three teams and us in the league.
We were really exposed in three matches by the Blues despite being on a solid run of form. This time things are even worse following the recent losses in the league. As such, a draw against Pep Guardiola’s team would be a great result for us even though we should ideally be challenging to secure all three points.

Despite their dominance, the Premier League champions are not invincible, as they have been caught out at times. Having a go at them quickly on the counters by taking advantage of the space is one of the best ways to achieve that objective. The 52-year-old has emphasised that by demanding the players to be compact and hurt the opposition in appropriate situations.
It remains to be seen if we can get a solid outcome against the league leaders in the fixture that is set to take place later today. Despite the tough task at hand, we are hopeful that the North London side can secure a great result as it would do wonders in our pursuit to qualify for the Champions League next term.
