Daniel Levy considers rehiring Mauricio Pochettino should Antonio Conte depart Tottenham Hotspur
According to The Telegraph (Subscription Required), Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy could be considering a swoop for former boss Mauricio Pochettino should Antonio Conte depart the club. The Argentine manager is also thought to be on the radar of fellow arch-rivals Manchester United.
The Lilywhites have struggled to maintain any semblance of consistency over the last few years. The 49-year-old took Spurs to the finals of the UEFA Champions League in the 2018-19 season but a subsequently poor run of form in the next campaign saw him get the sack.
Since then, Jose Mourinho, Ryan Mason, and Nuno Espirito Santo have all been at the helm but none of them lasted long enough to make a suitable impact. With such a staggering managerial turnover, the Lilywhites sought out Antonio Conte who not only has an established resume but also embodies an attacking brand of football.
Whilst there had been an air of positivity surrounding his arrival, the Italian manager is soon realising the enormity of the task at Hotspur Way. The former Chelsea manager wasn’t ably backed in January as the club failed to land several of their priority targets.
Conte has managed to get the best out of his players across several leagues, but at the moment it seems like he would need a bit more time and patience at N-17. Tottenham’s star striker Harry Kane has also struggled to replicate the kind of form that he has shown in previous seasons amidst links to fellow rivals Manchester City.
There has been a lot of trouble going and Pochettino would be well aware of the club’s internal structure. He came close to leading the London-based club to European glory but his tenure wasn’t without problems of its own.
The performances had started to deteriorate severely towards the business end of his time at Tottenham coupled with his inability to deliver silverware could be seen as some of the major factors that led to his dismissal.
Antonio Conte still has a great deal of time left on his contract. That being said, the Italian seems to be left a frustrating figure as the defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers saw him lose three back-to-back matches for the first time since 2009. The inability to bring more players who are suited to his game is also a big hurdle.
Conte didn’t have the luxury of a pre-season but has now spent a decent amount of time at the club. Keeping all these points in mind, the pursuit of Pochettino could be a double-edged sword that depends on different factors such as Conte’s departure and a poor run of results. That being said the club would be looking to make a statement with its upcoming Premier League match against Manchester City.

A favourable result in that fixture could go a long way in boosting the morale of the players as well as the fans and could be just the momentum that the North Londoners require at the moment. This is easier said than done considering our recent record in the Premier League and who we are up against.
