Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur set to end interest in AS Roma winger Nicolo Zaniolo
According to the Italian newspaper Il Tempo via Giallorossi.net (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur are set to put an end to their transfer interest in AS Roma winger Nicolo Zaniolo. The forward has enjoyed a solid season so far after he suffered two ACL injuries over the past two years.
The 22-year-old is currently engaged in contract negotiations to discuss a renewal to tie him down on a new deal. However, there has been little progress so far as he is claimed to be disillusioned with life in Rome. Hence, he may look to move elsewhere for a fresh challenge in his playing career.
However, Tottenham will “walk away” from their pursuit to get the signature of Zaniolo after knowing his valuation. They will have to meet the price tag of £50million in transfer fees which have caused them to take this stance. They would rather spend that money in other areas where there is a need for it.
Good decision?
Considering how we brought in Dejan Kulusevski from Juventus last month, our need for a right-winger has been extinguished to an extent. With Lucas Moura in our ranks, one can understand the North London club’s choice of not wanting to spend big on one single position.
After all, there is a need to bolster our squad across multiple positions, so we must carefully use our transfer budget to back Antonio Conte. Bryan Gil will be ending his loan spell next summer, which could add more depth to the left-wing. That, in turn, can give Conte the option to use Steven Bergwijn on both sides as necessary.
We still do not have a backup option to Harry Kane, while we could use some additions in midfield, right-wingback and central defence. Fabio Paratici could also look for a backup to Hugo Lloris, who can take over the reins in the future. Pierluigi Gollini has not shown any indications that he is the right man, so we may see the club opt against activating his buy option.

The lack of quality in the backline has been highlighted in our recent losses in the Premier League. Moreover, there is a lack of central midfielders following the departures of Tanguy Ndombele, Dele Alli and Giovani Lo Celso in the January transfer window. Rodrigo Bentancur would not be enough to cover for them, which calls for the need for more signings.
We cannot really fault the club for stopping their pursuit of the Italian after taking all these reasons into consideration. It’s not like he is among the very top of the players among his age group or position to warrant such high fees. It remains to be seen what areas Spurs will look to bolster in the summer transfer window.
