Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur battle Newcastle United for AS Roma star Jordan Veretout
According to the Italian media outlet Roma Today (h/t Sussex World), Tottenham Hotspur will face off against Newcastle United to sign AS Roma star Jordan Veretout in the summer transfer window. He is in line to leave Stadio Olimpico at the end of the current campaign, which has attracted attention from these clubs.
Veretout is being closely monitored by clubs other than Tottenham and Newcastle as well, but their identities remain unknown at this moment. It is claimed that the midfielder could depart Roma for around £21million amidst interest from all these teams.
The 28-year-old was a transfer target for Spurs last month, but their approach was shut down by Jose Mourinho as he did not want to deplete his squad depth mid-season. Antonio Conte is a keen admirer of the central midfielder, which had prompted Fabio Paratici’s enquiry in January.
Summer arrival?
It would not be too much of a reach to say that Conte remains a fan of the Frenchman as it would be unreasonable to think otherwise. After all, that would be such a drastic change in a short period pf time.
The Roma star has made 33 appearances this season and has scored four goals and made nine assists across all competitions. His performances have contributed to his side’s challenge to secure a European spot for next season.
The former Aston Villa man could be a fine addition to our squad and has bloomed to reach newer heights late in his career. Our options in the midfield have been reduced due to the January departures, which has left us in a bit of a rut currently.
The Serie A superstar can negate our issues by uplifting the quality of the midfield while adding to the squad depth as well. We could definitely use him in our team, considering how Oliver Skipp, Harry Winks, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur are our only options at this instant.
