Transfer News: Manchester United “consider” signing Sam Johnstone amidst Tottenham Hotspur interest
According to transfer news on 90Min (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United are assessing their option to enter the race for Sam Johnstone amidst interest from Tottenham Hotspur. He could be in line to leave West Bromwich Albion and secure a move to the Premier League.
Man United are currently “considering” to target Johnstone based on the future of Dean Henderson. They could rival Spurs to secure the services of the Championship star if Henderson ends up leaving in the future.
The 28-year-old had initially left the Red Devils to join West Brom back in 2018, but it is unsure whether they would hold an advantage over us due to previous affiliations with the player. It will be interesting to see how this situation pans out in the coming months ahead of the summer transfer window.
Spurs be wary!
The interest from Ralf Rangnick’s side cannot be taken lightly, as Henderson could leave Old Trafford after all. David de Gea has overthrown the Man United star from the starting spot, and the second choice keeper has struggled to earn minutes this term. He has more than enough quality to start regularly for top teams, so a departure cannot be ruled out in any case.
As such, we should prepare for the worst and make our case at the earliest to finalise a move before the Manchester club can try their hand at signing a player we are also apparently targeting. After all, we could also require additions in the goalkeeping department before the next season commences.
Pierluigi Gollini is here only on a loan spell and could return to Atalanta once this season ends. Spending £12.9million to trigger his optional clause would be an unnecessary expense when he has not really shown any signs of being the successor we need for Hugo Lloris.
Johnstone, on the other hand, is in line to be available on a free transfer next summer. Hence, we must push ahead and finalise a move for the Baggies keeper before Rangnick’s team reaches a firm stance over Henderson’s future.
Moreover, even if Hugo Lloris has signed an extension recently, we still need to replace him in the future. His path to the number 1 spot in a Spurs shirt then becomes a bit clearer. Compete with the Frenchman for starts before he leaves N17, and then become the undisputed starter between the sticks.

Ever since we signed Lloris, we haven’t really had to worry about who our number 1 goalkeeper is going to be. But now that the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner is in the twilight of his career, we must not be lethargic in our bid to replace him in the long term, and pursue targets we firmly believe have what it takes to replace our captain for the near future.
