Tottenham Hotspur offer a contract extension to Ryan Sessegnon following recent displays

According to The Times (Subscription Required), Tottenham Hotspur have decided to offer a contract extension to Ryan Sessegnon after his improved displays of late under Antonio Conte. He seems to have become the first choice option for his manager in the left-wingback position, piping Sergio Reguilon in the process.

Tottenham signed Sessegnon for £25million from Fulham back in 2019, but he failed to replicate the promise he showed at Craven Cottage. Injuries have plagued his playing career at N17 and also during his loan spell at TSG Hoffenheim. With better fortunes aiding him, he appears to be rediscovering that lost mojo.

Conte has lived up to his expectations of raising the players’ quality just as he did at his previous clubs. Oliver Skipp is one such example at Spurs, and the coach seems to have replicated the same with the 21-year-old wingback. That was highlighted in the recent 4-0 victory against Leeds United, which was one of the best performances for the North Londoners.

Deserved?

The Premier League defender will enter the final year of his current contract at the end of the current campaign. The Italian manager seems to have taken a liking to the wingback, so it would not have been wise to let his current deal reach that stage.

Fabio Paratici seems to want to get ahead of the situation so that they would not be forced to play ball to the player’s demands. Moreover, the English defender’s current contract only earns him wages of around £55,000-per-week, which could be deemed really low if he continues to maintain this trajectory.

Hence, it is wise on the club’s part to put a new deal on the table to secure the Spurs ace’s long term future. Now we have to wait and see the response from his camp and whether they would accept the offer or not.

After all, we would want to keep hold of someone who seems to have a future under the 52-year-old boss. However, the Tottenham left-wingback must become more confident with his abilities which as expressed by the former Inter Milan coach last week.

If Englishman can replicate his form from the 2017-18 season, where he scored 16 goals alongside eight assists from 52 matches across all competitions, we would receive a massive boost in quality and possibly our chances of attaining a top-four finish in the league. Whether that will happen or not remains to be seen in due time.
