According to Sky Sports News (h/t Daily Mail), Bayern Munich are the latest club to join Tottenham Hotspur in the pursuit of Middlesbrough starlet Djed Spence.

The 21-year-old is one of the hottest properties in England at the moment. His performances have attracted a lot of eyeballs with bitter rival Arsenal also monitoring his progress. Apart from Munich, other German clubs such as Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen as well as RB Leipzig are also thought to be interested in the youngster.

The London-born player has bagged two goals and provided three assists in 32 matches across all competitions for Nottingham Forest on loan this season. Stats only tell part of the story as the Middlesborough wing-back is more than what meets the eye and is showing signs of becoming a potentially lethal player.

What does the future hold?

It would be safe to say that the North Londoners have struggled to maintain their consistency in the last few seasons. The club from N-17 has seen a staggering turnover of managers and ever since Mauricio Pochettino left the Lilywhites.

With the likes of Fabio Paratici and Antonio Conte arriving at the club, Spurs could finally be headed in a new direction. The Italian manager prefers to play an attacking brand of football that relies a great deal on energetic wing-backs charging up and down the lines.

Despite his previous credentials and the renewed enthusiasm, there is still a long way to go if the former Inter Milan manager is to leave a positive stamp on Spurs. Bringing in a young full-back like Spence may not be the ultimate solution but could certainly prove to be a step in the right direction.

Whilst the club does possess the likes of Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal who can be deployed in the same position both of them have been underwhelming so far. Doherty has been the favoured option in the recent fixtures having scored his first Spurs goal in their last Premier League fixture but a lack of consistency in that position has been a nagging issue that has haunted the squad this season.

The wing-backs who are mostly seen as pseudo wingers themselves have become a pivotal part of modern football. At 21, Spence still has his best footballing years ahead of him and could go on to become a great long-term asset to the club.

That being said, the interest from clubs across Europe along with his recent performances would make it that much more difficult for the North Londoners to lure him away at the moment.
