Tottenham Hotspur wing-back Ryan Sessegnon sheds lights on his resurgence at the club
Speaking for the Tottenham Hotspur Newsletter (h/t Football.London), Ryan Sessegnon has spoken out about his current dynamic and relationship with Tottenham Hotspur. The 21-year-old wing-back has slowly started to cement his place in the starting lineup with Spurs following the absence of Sergio Reguilon.
The former Fulham starlet has struggled to live up to the stellar buzz that surrounded him ever since he made the switch to the North Londoners. Injuries and a staggering turnover of managers at the club from N-17 have also played a role in disrupting any kind of momentum that the player initially had going for him.
Of late, Sessegnon has filled in capably in the absence of Reguilon and appears to be experiencing a resurgence of sorts. The ex-Real Madrid player’s injury could have thrown Spurs into disarray had Sessegnon not stepped up to fill the void.
The 21-year-old has now made a claim for that position based on his recent performances. Whilst the Spaniard is slowly recovering from Covid and trying to get back to match fitness Antonio Conte has made it clear that Reguilon will have to fight for his position in lieu of Sessegnon’s recent performances.
According to the club newsletter (h/t Football.London), the 21-year-old left-wing back revealed that he is in a good place physically and mentally. He also highlighted that this has been one of his best phrases with Spurs so far.
“I feel great in my body, the best I’ve felt since I’ve been at the club. Yes, for sure, starting five games in a row is the most for me at the club so far, so yes, I’m in a good place physically and mentally, and long may it continue. To feel good is obviously very important. Then, the way the manager wants me to play, up and down, up and down, the energy levels have to be there. I’ve shown that in the last few games and that’s good, getting that consistency under my belt.”
Ryan Sessegnon and his resurgence at Tottenham
The youngster has mostly suffered from a lack of first-team opportunities with the club to date. It has been a different story for the Roehampton-born player this campaign. With Antonio Conte still trying to find his preferred lineup and the unavailability of Reguilon, the ex-Fulham man has played in 15 matches across all competitions this season and has also pitched in with one assist.
The Spanish wing-back has also started to regain his fitness to some extent and was given a few minutes on the pitch in the shock defeat to Middlesbrough in their last FA Cup fixture. The 25-year-old is also thought to be on the radar of his former employer Los Blancos who could be interested in resigning him.
With Sessegnon rediscovering his form and also managing to get a crucial assist in their Premier League fixture against Leeds United, the Italian manager could have some great competition for starters down the left-flank.
The wing-backs play a crucial role in Conte’s system and were also an integral part of his success at clubs like Juventus, Chelsea, and Inter Milan. The 52-year-old manager is also known to bring out the best from his players and the English professional wing-back could immensely profit from that.
After an oscillating season so far, it is good to see that some of the players are starting to make a mark and getting more game time under their belt. There is still a long way to go at Hotspur Way but the rejuvenation of Ryan Sessegnon could be good news for us.
