Transfer News: Joe Rodon set to leave Tottenham Hotspur in summer amidst Newcastle, Brighton interest

According to Football Insider (h/t Yorkshire Evening Post), Joe Rodon is set to leave Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window amidst interest from Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion. He has failed to break into the starting XI under Antonio Conte and has largely been cast aside by the manager.

Rodon has failed to impress Conte so far, which has resulted in his current plight at N17. The centre-back has played just 187 minutes under the Tottenham boss, showcasing how dire the situation is right now. That is further highlighted when one considers the fact that the defence has struggled with form and injuries since the coach’s appointment.

The 24-year-old could not earn game time even in such cases, indicating how the Spurs manager may not have plans for him moving forward. As such, the defender will “100%” depart the club at the end of this season. Newcastle and Brighton have already expressed an interest in signing him, and this update would be music to their ears in that regard.

No way around?

It seems that this coming summer might just be the end of the road for the Welshman in terms of his playing career at N17. After all, he failed to get into the team even when the likes of Eric Dier, Japhet Tanganga and Cristian Romero were out injured, albeit at different points of the season.

Davinson Sanchez is also evidently above Rodon in the pecking order, even when the Colombian international has left a lot to be desired from his performances this term. It is truly a shame to see the ex-Swansea man not play a bigger part in our team under Conte, especially after his UEFA Euros campaign with Rob Page’s Wales last summer.

It is still unknown why the former Inter Milan coach has not provided Rodon with adequate opportunities. Maybe he hasn’t impressed in training or Conte just doesn’t see him fit in his system. Whatever the reason may be, there is hardly a point in keeping a player that the gaffer won’t play too often.

It would be in the best interest of all the parties to part ways next summer, taking all these factors into account. With the Magpies and the Seagulls keeping tabs on the Spurs defender, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the back of Tottenham’s number 14 this summer.

That being said, the North London side would do well to recoup at least some of the £11million that we paid to Swansea City to secure his services. After all, the central defender has performed well for his club and country whenever he has played during this period. Whether Fabio Paratici can get a decent sum or not remains to be seen- if we decide to part ways with the player, that is.
