Tottenham Hotspur loanee Cameron Carter-Vickers speaks about the pressure of playing for Celtic
In conversation with Sky Sports (h/t Football Scotland), Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers shed light on the mentality required to play for Celtic.
The 24-year-old has been a dependable presence at the back for the Hoops alongside Carl Starfelt. He has put in pivotal performances and played a crucial role in keeping the Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership at the moment.
The American professional footballer has previously had loan spells with the likes of Sheffield United, Swansea, and Bournemouth but has never really cemented his position in the senior squad with the Lilywhites to date.
That being said, the 24-year-old seems to have got some valuable minutes under his belt. Carter-Vickers has bagged three goals and clocked one assist in 35 matches across all competitions for Celtic so far.
Speaking with Sky Sports (h/t Football Scotland), the American central-defender spoke about the mentality required to play for the likes of Celtic. This is especially true considering how close the race for the Scottish Premiership title can get.
“If you play for Celtic or Rangers there is so little margin for error. There is a lot of weeks where we have had midweek games and games at the weekend. So it is tough to mentally cope with that pressure.”
Cameron carter-Vicker and the way forward
The 24-year-old is starting to show a lot of promise with the Bhoys this campaign. He has asserted himself in the backline at Parkhead. The American could still potentially have some of his best footballing years ahead of him.
The North Londoners have struggled to nail down a strong partnership in central defence in the past few seasons. Antonio Conte plays with a back three that usually consists of Ben Davies, Eric Dier, and Cristian Romero when they are fully fit.
This partnership has been far from convincing at times and seems to crack under pressure. The centre-back position could be a real issue that the club would have to sort out if they are to compete at a consistent level.
Whilst there was a renewed sense of enthusiasm after the Italian manager arrived at Hotspur Way, it is quite evident that there is still a long way to go if the club is to compete for silverware amongst the elite in England and Europe.
Should the 24-year-old continue to impress with the Scottish club, Conte could be tempted to bring him back to N-17 to give him a fair opportunity. The American professional footballer could use the domestic competitions as a launchpad for a regular place in the Spurs squad.

That being said, there are quite a few if and buts involved and the player would be focussing on doing the best he can with Celtic at the moment. Only time can tell what the future holds for Carter-Vickers but it feels good that one of our lads is putting in a pivotal performance albeit for another club on a loan deal.
