Martin Keown backs Tottenham Hotspur for a top-four finish ahead of Arsenal in the Premier League this season
In conversation with BT Sport (h/t Metro), Arsenal legend Martin Keown has backed Tottenham Hotspur to secure a top-four finish ahead of his former club in the Premier League this campaign.
The Gunners have been making great progress patiently. They already sit fourth in the PL table at the moment with a gap of six points separating us from our North London rivals. Mikel Arteta has put his faith in the youngsters and seems to be reaping its rewards right now.
Despite this upturn in form, Keown still backs the Lilywhites as favourites for a top-four finish ahead of the Emirates outfit. Spurs have pivoted in a positive direction ever since the arrival of Antonio Conte.
Speaking to BT Sport (h/t Metro), the 55-year-old has tipped Spurs to secure the coveted UEFA Champions League qualification spot ahead of the Gunners this campaign.
‘Now there’s a lot of games ahead and I still put Spurs as favourites to make top four. Let’s see if they can do it. Arsenal, we have now got to see, but when I look at the fixtures and I see games away at Chelsea, Spurs, it’s tough. It’s in Arsenal’s hands and if they keep performing as they are they can do it.’
Is European football on the cards?
Ever since Mauricio Pochetino took the Lilywhites to the final of the UEFA Champions League in the 2019-20 season, the club has steadily tapered and struggled to reach the same level again. There has been a staggering managerial turnover since that time but none of them have managed to create a substantial impact at N-17.
There seems to be a renewed sense of enthusiasm as the former Chelsea boss has managed to instil an attacking brand of football at Spurs but the lack of incomings in the January window means that Conte has had to work with limited resources.
That being said, Harry Kane has managed to revitalize himself under the tutelage of the 52-year-old manager. The English captain has now bagged 15 goals and snatched three assists in just 26 games under the Italian manager. Despite these positives, the Lilywhites have largely struggled to maintain their consistency this season.
While there have been signs of encouragement, there is still a long way to go before the end of the season. The Spurs faithful would be looking for a top-four finish as the most realistic target and serve as a launching pad for the years to come.
