Tottenham Hotspur frustrated as Cristian Romero joins up with Argentina national team despite being suspended

According to the Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur are frustrated by the situation surrounding Cristian Romero after he joined up with the Argentina national team despite being suspended right now. He cannot feature in March’s World Cup Qualifiers as things stand, adding to the annoyance of the English club.

Earlier, FIFA had banned Romero from this month’s Qualifiers for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. They took that decision after he failed to follow the guidelines that were set up during that time as football returned to normal after the Covid-19 situation. He allegedly did not comply with Brazil’s protocols during that period, which prevented arrivals from the UK who were not Brazilian citizens or permanent residents.

However, the 23-year-old has joined the provisional squad despite the ban after travelling last night following the 3-1 win against West Ham United. That is because the AFA are hoping that an appeal will see the player handed a reduced suspension ahead of the match against Ecuador.

Why? Just why?

Tottenham’s frustration is certainly understandable, especially when one considers the fact that Argentina have already qualified for the World Cup that will take place later this year. As such, it does not make sense why they are so desperate to add the Premier League star to their squad.

Logically, this month’s Qualifiers would have been a perfect opportunity for them to test things out with their squad depth and allow the Argentine centre-back to stay with us. He could have also enjoyed a much-needed rest following the long term injury and continuous matches he has had since his return.

Not to mention, FIFA could still reject the appeal, and the former Juventus man’s trip could end up being useless. There is also the risk of him picking up another injury which is always something that we need to be wary of, considering the last setback that he suffered when he was out on international duty.

Who knows, maybe it would also have been best for Argentina, in the long run, to let Romero stay with us for now. The central defender has a problem of being too rash and picking up yellow cards due to his aggressiveness, which was highlighted by Antonio Conte as well.

Romero could have used this break to work on his issues with Conte, which in turn, could have helped Argentina in their pursuit to win the World Cup. Unfortunately, that is not the case, and we are hopeful that the ban will not be reduced. That way, the centre-back can enjoy ample rest while also not running the risk of picking up an injury.
