Newcastle United add Sam Johnstone to four-man goalkeeper shortlist amidst Tottenham Hotspur interest
According to Daily Mail Online (h/t The Sun), Newcastle United have added Sam Johnstone to their four-man goalkeeper shortlist amidst interest from Tottenham Hotspur for a future move. He is in line to leave West Bromwich Albion at the end of this season to make the jump to the Premier League due to the high demand.
Newcastle are keen on strengthening their goalkeeping position as Eddie Howe wants to add more competition for Martin Dubravka and his starting spot. As such, they have drawn up a transfer shortlist that included Johnstone alongside Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga, Dean Henderson of Manchester United and Bernd Leno from Arsenal.
The Magpies’ decision would deal a blow to Tottenham, but they are not the only Premier League rivals in the transfer race. Man United, Southampton and West Ham United are also keeping tabs on Johnstone to make their move in the summer transfer window. It remains to be seen where the England international will end up next season
More obstacles for Spurs
The 28-year-old could be a valuable signing for us, considering how he is out of contract this summer. We could bring him in on a free transfer and allow Pierluigi Gollini to return to Atalanta at the end of his loan period. After all, we will not have to part ways with £12.9million to permanently sign Gollini and instead use that money elsewhere.
Johnstone is certainly a solid option to bring in, considering how he is in contention to become the England national team’s number one goalkeeper. Not to mention, the shot-stopper was solid for West Brom in the English top-flight last season.
Hence, the Championship star could certainly do a solid job in replacing Gollini and offering a backup option to Hugo Lloris. Who knows, maybe Johnstone could even overthrow the skipper for the starting spot if he impresses Antonio Conte.

Facilitating a move would not be easy, with several clubs monitoring the West Brom ace’s situation. The Toons’ interest could be deemed a lower degree since it is shared among three other options as well.
It remains to be seen how this situation regarding Johnstone would develop in the coming months ahead of the summer transfer window. Let’s hope that the board can get this deal done if Conte gives his approval to sign him after this campaign.
