Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal to battle for the transfer of Rennes midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu
According to L’Equipe (h/t Daily Express), Arsenals’ high hopes of landing Rennes midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu face stiff competition from bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Ugochukwu has attracted the eyes of European heavyweights due to his incredible defensive approach coupled with his exceptional passing skills while operating in the middle of the pitch. Still only 18-years-old, he has already featured in 17 matches across all competitions for Stade Rennais.
The French youngster has attracted interest from Premier League giants Arsenal who believe Ugochukwu has the potential to become ‘the new Patrick Vieira.’ The Gunners manager, Mikel Arteta, has already started rebuilding the team around young players, and Ugochukwu could be the next piece of his puzzle.
However, Arsenal will not get a free run even if they tried to pursue the French youngster as their bitter rival Tottenham have also kept a close tab on his progress. The situation could lead both London clubs to engage in a transfer battle in the coming transfer window.
After Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga burst onto the scene with incredible performances, European heavyweights started taking a close interest in Stade Rennais’ young contingent. Ugochukwu, who possesses a similar appearance to Camavinga and could be the next big thing if given the right mentoring.
Tottenham Hotspur offloaded some crucial players in the winter transfer window, including midfield stars like Dele Alli and Tanguy Ndombele. But to fill the position, they have only signed Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus so far.
Even though the team has shown promising performances lately, they might need more strength in depth to do better next season. Spurs are better off choosing for quality over quantity.
