Tottenham Hotspur handed transfer boost as Bayern Munich are hesitant to fork out £20million for Djed Spence
According to journalist Tobi Altschaffl on Bayern Insider Podcast (h/t The Express), Tottenham Hotspur have received a transfer boost as Bayern Munich are hesitant to meet the valuation for Djed Spence after this season. He has been sensational on loan at Nottingham Forest this term, which has resulted in several clubs keeping tabs on his performances.
Antonio Conte has demanded that Tottenham should bring in a new right-wingback into the squad. Their interest in Spence is linked to Conte’s desires, but they would have to deal with Bayern in this race. Middlesbrough are set to slap a price tag of £20million for the defender as they are ready to sell him, having depended on Isaiah Jones.
However, the German club is reluctant to meet the asking price for the Englishman. They view him as someone “not worth splashing a lot of money on”.While they have shortlisted the player, he is not among their top targets at this moment. The Bavarians believe he needs time before becoming a regular first-team player, prompting them to take this stance.
Should Spurs take a similar stance?
This piece of information would definitely be a major boost for the North London side should they actively target the 21-year-old. However, one could question whether the Bundesliga giants do have some weight in their stance or not. If they do, we should also try to assess our options once again before making a move.
Then again, hesitation from our side could see us lose out on a talented prospect who could become a future superstar. The Championship fullback has showcased at Forest the immense potential he has in his bag. He has performed at a similar level against Premier League sides like Arsenal and Leicester City as well.
As such, it is advisable that we bank on the fact that the Boro loanee could repay that amount in the future. Moreover, we do not need him to start regularly looking at how Matt Doherty has reignited his career under the Spurs manager. As such, we can afford to give Spence some time to get used to the increased challenge should we sign him.

The Gunners have also expressed their interest in the English prospect, so we cannot sit idly by for long. With Emerson Royal struggling to impose himself so far, we may need to move him out just after one campaign with someone like Spence.
The latter can ease himself into the Premier League while Doherty takes the brunch of the minutes moving forward. And with time, Spence can become a crucial player for us if proper guidance and environment are set up to ensure his growth.
