Defender Sergio Reguilon opens up on his move to Tottenham Hotspur and speaks about his weaknesses

Speaking with the club’s official media on Youtube (h/t football.london), defender Sergio Reguilon opened up about his move to Tottenham Hotspur and his emotional experiences on the pitch, saying that he was learning to stay calm.

The Spainard moved to Spurs in 2020 from Real Madrid, and has since been a huge hit in north London due to his performances on the pitch, protecting the left flank of the pitch for his team.

Reguilon spoke about his decision to move to the Premier League from La Liga, saying it was a chance to fight to become a better player and that his biggest challenge was to leave behind his friends and family in his native country for a new experience.

“I think to take the decision to come here to the Premier League, to fight to become a better player, because it’s not easy to leave your family, your friends, your girlfriend in Spain and come here for one dream. I think for me, that’s my biggest challenge.”

This season, the left-back has had to compete for a place in the starting XI with Ryan Sessegnon, who has recently become a vital cog in the team under manager Antonio Conte. With the Englishman out due to injury at the moment, Reguilon will be looking to nail down the spot in Sessegnon’s absence.

“Sergio, relax sometimes”

The 25-year-old has proven to be a very emotional player on the pitch for the Lilywhites, recently getting involved with Kurt Zouma and Aaron Cresswell in an incident on the pitch during his side’s 3-1 win over West Ham United in their last fixture.

The Spain international said he was learning to stay calm in tense situations, saying that he was too emotional sometimes in football and that he has to control his reactions by reminding himself that life had to be dealt with by staying relaxed.

“This year I’m learning to stay calm. I’m a person who’s too emotional sometimes in football and also in my private life. I have to control myself and say, ‘Sergio, relax sometimes. Take life with more calm.'”

Ever since his move from Madrid, the defender has been a favourite with the Tottenham faithful, who have enjoyed the player’s passion and aggression on the pitch as he tracks back to win the ball as well as create opportunities for his attacking teammates.

This season, the left-back was out injured for a while and only recently returned in the game against Everton, with Reguilon also scoring on his return to action in a 5-0 thrashing of the Toffees. At the time the ex-Real Madrid man was injured, Sessegnon took his place.

Now, with Sessegnon injured, the left-back carousel is in effect again as the Spaniard looks to take to the field once again after the international break. The position is his to lose now, and he will look to make the most of the fortuitous opportunity.

In Conte, Reguilon also has a manager who displays the same kind of emotion and passion on the field, with the Italian always an animated character on the touchline. They seem to make a good combo together, and we can enjoy watching the pair help us to a strong finish in the Premier League by the summer.
