Spurs Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur pushing to sign Barcelona forward Memphis Depay this summer
According to Mundo Deportivo (h/t Express), Tottenham Hotspur are ‘pushing’ to land Barcelona forward Memphis Depay at the end of the season in a bid to bolster their attacking ranks.
Depay moved to Barcelona only last year, signing from Olympique Lyon after he was hugely impressive for the Ligue 1 side in the four years he spent in France, becoming their go-to man for goals.
The player has continued his fantastic form in La Liga as well since his transfer last summer, as he was one of the few bright stars that the team had when Ronald Koeman was in charge of the side in what was a disappointing run of form under the former Barca star. That run has continued under Xavi Hernandez, their new manager.
Spurs were one of the clubs linked with signing Depay when he was departing Lyon, but it bore no fruit as the Catalan side ultimately won the race for his signature as Tottenham began the campaign with only Harry Kane as their sole senior striker. It’s not completely wrong to suggest that it was an important signing that we missed out, given Depay’s form for Barca.

Despite last summer’s disappointment, it is said that the English club has made an offer for the player, as manager Antonio Conte wants to reinforce his squad with top-quality recruits in a bid to turn the Lilywhites into world-beaters.
Although the Catalans only signed him a year ago, Barcelona are currently weighing up whether to accept Spurs’ offer or not. This is likely to hinge on the transfer targets that they have identified at the end of the season and whether they are successful in their attempts.
The 28-year-old is in the prime of his playing career at the moment, being one of the star players that the Nou Camp had to cheer about when they were going through a terrible string of results under Koeman.
Although the Dutch international is not as prominent a star in the team at the moment due to Ousmane Dembele’s revival under Xavi, the ex-Manchester United star has not disappointed when he has taken to the field. An able dribbler who has a good shot on him, Depay can operate anywhere across the frontline despite recently flourishing as a centre-forward.
Tottenham, however, will not have a free pass to sign the Dutchman as they aren’t the only English side interested in the player – which is something Barcelona have apparently confirmed. The former PSV sensation is also attracting interest from Italy as AC Milan, Juventus, Inter Milan, and Napoli are all keen on signing him in the summer.

Evidently, there is a lot of hype and interest surrounding Depay at the end of the season. It remains to be seen whether he would want a move away after only spending a year in Spain, or whether he will look to continue his career under Xavi, who is leading a new revolution at the club to take them back to the top.
Leaving Lyon for Barca last summer would have been a big career decision for him and unless there’s been a change surrounding Depay’s prominence at Camp Nou, it would be unwise of us to put all our eggs in one basket. Spurs would be smart, in this case, to keep their options open if they want a centre-forward this summer.
