Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur battle Manchester United and Arsenal for AS Roma star Tammy Abraham

According to the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero [Print Edition] (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur will face competition from Manchester United for the signature of AS Roma star Tammy Abraham in the summer transfer window. He has been in fine form this season under the guidance of Jose Mourinho, and his performances have attracted attention from elsewhere.

Chelsea sold Abraham to Roma at the start of this season for a fee of £34million. The former did add a buy-back clause worth £68million, but it will only activate in the summer of 2023. That does give some time for other clubs to make their case, which could probably be the reason why Tottenham and Man United are looking to make an early move.

However, Spurs and the Red Devils are not the only Premier League clubs in the transfer race for the 24-year-old. Arsenal are also in the mix and are monitoring his current situation ahead of a potential move at the end of this campaign.

Can Spurs sign Abraham?

Our rival with the Blues in and of itself makes it a difficult transfer to accomplish. That is further highlighted when you consider how the Englishman is a Cobham academy graduate. Hence, it would not be too much of a reach to say that he may have some hesitations to join us.

Then again, we cannot rule out a move in any case when transfers of this nature have happened in the past. The same can happen here, but there are other obstacles that we may need to overcome. Mourinho may not want his side to sell the Serie A attacker, plus the forward himself can be in a similar boat. That is certainly a possibility since both parties have benefited a lot from each other.

Not to mention, we cannot guarantee game time, unlike the Gunners or the Manchester club, considering how we have Harry Kane in our ranks. Our talisman would undoubtedly be a starter which means that Abraham may prefer to move to Old Trafford or The Emirates over us.

Thomas Tuchel’s side may not be an immediate threat as the buy-back option does not click in until 2023. Despite that, we have obstacles in our hands that we need to solve at this moment. We have often struggled to bring in quality options in the centre-forward role in the past due to Kane’s presence.

That may be the case here as well, but the England skipper’s future is far from being secured at this moment. Ideally, we would want Kane to stay with us, but we also need to prepare for the worst. Abraham would undoubtedly be a solid choice in such a case looking at how he has scored 23 goals alongside four assists from 40 matches across all competitions this term.

It remains to be seen how our interest in the England international will develop in the coming months ahead of this summer.
