Gianluca Di Marzio: Lautaro Martinez prefers to join Atletico Madrid rather than Tottenham Hotspur
Transfer specialist Gianluca Di Marzio has conveyed that Lautaro Martinez prefers to join Atletico Madrid rather than Tottenham Hotspur. He has been linked with a move elsewhere and could end up leaving Giuseppe Meazza in the summer transfer window.
Martinez had signed a five-year contract extension last year, but that has not stopped him from being targeted by other clubs. Arsenal has expressed their interest in the centre-forward, with Tottenham and Atletico being potential destinations. However, the latter seems to be in the lead, which would be a blow to Fabio Paratici, who is an admirer of the attacker.
Speaking in an interview with wettfreunde (h/t The Sun), Di Marzio has revealed that Spurs and Atleti could be the perfect choices for him after this season. However, he added that the forward would prefer to join forces with Diego Simeone despite Antonio Conte having managed him in the past.
“I think it could be the summer of Lautaro and Atletico Madrid or Tottenham could be perfect solutions for him but I know that he’d like to go to Madrid. Tottenham, because I think Tottenham will go forward to Lautaro, they wanted him last summer as they want another striker because they have to sell Kane. They want another striker to play with Kane or prepare the future without Kane and Lautaro Martinez is one of the players that Fabio Paratici loves more. If he (Lautaro) had to choose another team and another tournament he would choose Atletico Madrid and Simeone.”
Spurs dealt another blow
The Italian journalist’s words are interesting, to say the least, considering how he mentioned how Conte could use Martinez alongside Harry Kane in a two-man attacking set-up. After all, Son Heung-Min and Dejan Kulusevski are in our ranks, so one may think that a three at the front system would have been utilised moving forward.
Perhaps, the Spurs boss could have been looking to replicate what he did with Martinez and Romelu Lukaku during their days together at Inter Milan. Unfortunately for him, if he had such plans to do so, the latest update would not be a good piece of information at all.
That being said, there is always a possibility that the Inter attacker’s preference can be changed using the Tottenham coach as an incentive. That would not be an easy task, but we cannot rule that out either, especially when Di Marzio has declared us one of the ideal destinations.

Any move for the Argentine forward would not be easy as it is claimed that he would cost at least €70million despite the Nerazzurri’s financial crisis. The Gunners are also in the fray but they may not be keen to secure the 24-year-old’s services considering how they were not addressed by the transfer guru.
That being said, Martinez is also touted as an alternative for Kane in case the latter leaves in the future. Let’s hope such an outcome would not unravel in the future and our pursuit of the Serie A star would be independent of the England captain’s future.
