Ben Davies delivers verdict on Tottenham Hotspur’s progress under Antonio Conte
Ben Davies has weighed in with his thoughts on the progress Tottenham Hotspur have made under Antonio Conte so far. They are currently in fourth place in the Premier League table, which is certainly a great achievement indeed when looking at their situation before the boss’ appointment back in November.
Tottenham are currently in a three-match winning run which has seen the chances of achieving Champions League qualification firmly within their own hands. That showcases the amount of work Conte and the players have done in this short period to make such a significant impact.
Davies has been a part of that as well, having become a crucial player for the coach despite being cast aside from the starting lineup by Nuno Espirito Santo. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, the Welsh defender has conveyed that he has been enjoying his new life under the Italian manager
“It’s been really good [under Conte]. We’ve worked incredibly hard, we’ve put a lot of work in on all aspects of our game – physically, tactically – and I think it’s starting to pay off for us now. We have a clear way of playing and we’re making it difficult for the opposition.”
Can Spurs still improve under Conte?
The 28-year-old has also expressed that the physical and tactical work they have done during training since November has been paying dividends recently. He added that the Spurs boss also changed the way they gear up as a team when preparing for matches, even if individual training has remained the same.
“It’s been hard work but the rewards seem to be showing on the pitch. As a player, when you’re on the training pitch, you do what the manager says. The way we’ve prepped for games have been different as a team, but on a personal level, not too much.”
The sentiment when the former Inter Milan boss initially came in was that he would just improve the team’s performance to build towards his first full campaign. However, despite no trophies to fight for even now, qualifying for the CL would undoubtedly be a great achievement looking at our situation in Santo’s last days at the helm.
However, the task is far from done since the season is still at large. We have several crucial games to take care of, like the ones against Liverpool and Arsenal, for example. However, the progress we have achieved makes us more confident to face them off compared to our feelings beforehand.
Davies epitomes the progress we have made so far, as he has become an important part of Conte’s system during this period. The full-back has been converted to a left centre-back in a three at the back system. However, he has slotted in seamlessly and has been one of our best performers during this period.
That is perfectly showcased by the fact that the Welshman has just missed one out of the possible 28 matches under the 52-year-old coach’s tenure. While the defender has played in a similar position for his national team in the past, the boss has further developed his playing style to get better suited to the role.
