Cristian Romero opens up on life at Tottenham Hotspur and the characteristics that define him as a player

Speaking to The Athletic, (subscription required) Cristian Romero shed light on his time at Tottenham Hotspur and the difficulty in settling in with the English club. Spurs agreed on a deal worth €55m to sign him from Atalanta last summer, making him the Lilywhites’ second-most expensive signing in history after Tanguy Ndombele.

The Argentine centre-back plays with a certain sense of aggression on the pitch. While on occasions it may bubble over, it is largely an attribute of his hunger and determination to give his all on the field.

The 23-year-old has bagged one goal in 25 matches across all competitions for the Lilwyhites so far this season. He has been a sturdy presence at the back and despite his relatively short span with Spurs, Antonio Conte has hinted that he is ‘perfect’ for the physicality of the Premier League, with Tottenham icon Ledle King also labelling him a “top, top player”.

This goes to show the kind of potential that Romero possesses. Despite having a spell on the sidelines due to injury, the former Atalanta and Juventus player has started cementing a regular spot beside Eric Dier and Ben Davies in that backline.

Speaking to the Athletic, (subscription required) the Argentine centre-back highlighted that things weren’t all smooth sailing at the start. Despite that Romero has now started to settle into his new life with the North Londoners. He also spoke about the kind of determination and desire that drives him as a player.

“I love life here. Right at the start, it wasn’t easy. I think when change happens in our life you always need a certain amount of time to be able to adapt and settle in.”

“First and foremost, the language is quite a basic thing and you need that to get by. But gradually I feel I’ve settled in.I’ve always had that spirit and desire and aggression. And I think if I ever lost that, I’d have a problem.”

The Argentine international still has some of his prime years ahead of him. Playing under an astute manager like Conte could help him further harness his potential. Whilst Romero is being tipped for great things there are still a few inconsistencies that creep up in this backline under pressure situations.

With time the club faithful would be hoping that the North Londoners can iron out such moments, in order to compete at a higher level more consistently. This would also help the club from N-17 close the gap with some of their top competitors like Liverpool, Manchester City, and Chelsea who have shown us the importance of a stable defensive setup.

Whilst we may seem to be headed in the right direction, there is still a long way to go at Hotspur Way if we are to challenge for titles continuously. Fabio Paratici has been trying his best to lure young talented players to the club with the future in mind.

Romero’s comment not only gives us an insight into his life but also shows us what it takes for a young player to hold his own in such a big league. We hope that he can continue growing on the same trajectory under the tutelage of the Italian manager.

Should that happen, it is quite possible that he would lead the backline at the North London club for years to come. That being said, only the future can tell what is in store for him as well as Tottenham Hotspur.
