Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur linked with move for Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves
According to Sky Sports (h/t Metro), Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move to sign Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves. He has enjoyed yet another solid campaign with his side so far after achieving promotion to the Premier League with them back in 2018.
Neves’ performances for Wolverhampton Wanderers have not gone unnoticed as he has attracted attention from across Europe. Barcelona, Manchester United and Arsenal have expressed interest to secure his services in the future. The competition would make life difficult for Tottenham if they hope to get their hands on the holding midfielder.
The Gunners are long-term admirers of the Portuguese international, and they have identified him as one of their top transfer targets for this summer. They had tried to facilitate a move for him last summer but failed to do so. They will be in the market this time around after this term.
Neves to Spurs, Arsenal, Barcelona or Man Utd?
The January transfer window saw us lose three of our midfielders in Dele Alli, Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso. While Ndombele and Lo Celso are set to return from their loan spells, it would not be too much of a reach to expect that they have no future at N17, especially when Antonio Conte had allowed them to leave in the first place.
However, we only brought in Rodrigo Bentancur in the winter transfer window to compensate for the exits. That is not ideal, as our squad depth could be tested heavily during the entirety of a season. Even if Conte only uses a two-man midfield, we still need more additions to deal with the uncertainties that will follow a long campaign.
Neves would be a great choice for us, plus his experience playing in the PL makes him a suitable prospect as well. That being said, it remains to be seen if Fabio Paratici and co. would be willing to part ways with at least £50million in transfer fees for the defensive midfielder.
That amount certainly seems reasonable considering how the 25-year-old will see his contract expire only in the summer of 2024. That gives Bruno Lage’s side more control regarding his future prospects, making the current valuation a fair price. That is without considering how he has attracted interest from some of the top clubs across Europe.
We dished out a massive sum for a player like Tanguy Ndombele who has turned out to be a flop in England. Neves, on the other hand, has proven his mettle with Portugal, in Liga NOS, and now in the PL.

If we are serious about signing him, our club would do well to be wary of Barca and Arsenal. Neves has mentioned in the past that he desires to play in the prestigious competition, which could certainly trim down the competition if the midfielder sticks to what he had said.
Spurs are currently in fourth position in the league while the Gunners have lost ground in the top four race recently. The Catalan giants, on the other hand, have done well under Xavi Hernandez to make top four this season.
