Tottenham Hotspur told to target Romelu Lukaku if Harry Kane leaves this summer
Tottenham Hotspur have been advised that they should target Romelu Lukaku if Harry Kane leaves them in the summer transfer window. That is the viewpoint of Darren Bent, who played for them as a striker between 2007 and 2009, scoring 25 goals and assisting seven times from 79 matches across all competitions during that period.
Kane’s future at Tottenham is far from certain despite his resurgence under Antonio Conte. Even the club’s form has not caused exit talk to die down at this point. He is being linked away with a move elsewhere right now. Manchester United are willing to rekindle their interest to sign him this summer.
Speaking to talkSPORT (h/t The Mirror), Bent has expressed that Spurs should bring in Lukaku if Kane does leave them in the future. The former attacker admits that both of them are different players, but he believes the Chelsea ace could do quite well under Conte due to their time together at Inter Milan.
“If the worst came to the worst and Harry Kane did go elsewhere, if they could get [Romelu] Lukaku… we’ve seen what he’s done under Conte, he got the best out of him.”
“I know they are completely different types of players, Harry Kane likes to drop in and technically a better footballer. But Lukaku would be an adequate replacement, certainly with everything he has done with Antonio Conte already so… I would.”
Should Spurs sign Lukaku?
Despite Kane’s future being surrounded by uncertainty, it would come as a welcome boost for us if we build on our impressive form in the past few weeks and seal UCL qualification over Manchester United. Then, it would be interesting to see if Kane would want to give that up and join another side.
After all, it is quite normal that someone like the England captain would want to play in this highly prestigious competition. If the Italian boss can help us achieve that target, we would have a case to keep the striker here for a longer period of time.
However, we must always plan for the worst and prepare for a scenario where the 28-year-old could leave N17 this summer. In such a case, Lukaku can be a solid option to replace Kane, although the former has struggled to get going at Stamford Bridge since moving there last summer.
One could say that the 52-year-old coach could revive Lukaku’s best self because of their successful time together at Inter. That would lead many to wonder why he can’t pair Kane and Lukaku together here just like Conte had Lautaro Martinez and the Belgian hitman at the Nerazzurri.
But for that to happen, Spurs would have to show interest in signing Lukaku, to begin with. Bent popping up the former Everton striker’s name is a surprise because firstly, he just moved to Chelsea last summer. And secondly, he plays for one of our biggest rivals. The last player to directly join us after having played for the Blues was Carlo Cudicini, and that was all the way back in the 2008/09 season.

Having the right profile is a factor that must be taken into consideration if we need to replace Kane moving forward. Lukaku and the Tottenham talisman are quite different in profiles, as Bent confirmed above, and we have already seen with Thomas Tuchel’s side how the Belgian has struggled as a solitary number 9.
Let’s hope that Kane will decide to stay so that we would not need to worry about such a case at all in the coming months.
