Transfer News: Newcastle United more optimistic about beating Tottenham Hotspur to sign Christian Eriksen
According to The Northern Echo, Newcastle United are growing ‘increasingly hopeful’ about beating Tottenham Hotspur to sign Christian Eriksen in the summer transfer window. He has been impressive for Brentford since joining them back in January following his cardiac arrest incident against Finland in the UEFA Euros last summer.
Eriksen had signed for the Bees on a short term contract that will expire at the end of this season. However, they are eager to tie him down on a new deal after his sensational displays since returning to top-flight football. However, an extension would not be easy as many clubs circle to take advantage of the free transfer opportunity that lies ahead.
Tottenham and Newcastle are two of them, but they are joined by West Ham United and Everton in this transfer race as well. However, the Magpies are increasingly hopeful about finalising a transfer for the Dane after the current campaign. They are also willing to match and better any offers from their rivals in this pursuit.
Transfer blow?
The Toon’s degree of interest is a problem, considering how they have been financially boosted by the ownership takeover. As such, we would find a stern challenge when it comes to taking them on in monetary terms. That is especially the case when they are willing to better any proposals, which does pose serious doubts about our chances.
That being said, fans would hope that the value of an emotional return to Spurs would persuade the 30-year-old to join forces with us once again this summer. Not to mention, he would also be reuniting with his former manager Antonio Conte, who was his boss during their time together at Inter Milan.
West Ham and the Toffees will also pose obstacles in our pathway if we want to overcome the challenge that lies ahead. We would also need to be wary of Thomas Frank’s side as well since they are the ones who gave the Premier League ace a chance to prove his worth after the horror incident.
The North London side could use the Danish international in their ranks, especially when they will engage in several different competitions from the next term onwards. As for us, we would be wise to first sort out the long-term futures of Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso this summer, with both midfielders currently out on loan.
Nevertheless, the prospect of signing a proven PL star such as Eriksen on a free could appeal to a lot of teams. As things stand right now, Spurs are doing better domestically as compared to Newcastle, West Ham, and Everton- with the latter currently in a relegation battle.

What’s more, should we achieve Champions League qualification, we would need quality additions to take us to the next level. Perhaps we could also use that to gain an edge over others in this transfer race. Until then, we must do our best to gain ground on Eddie Howe’s side, who appears to be “leading” going by this update.
