Former Spurs ace backs Tottenham to move for prolific Serie A goalscorer

Tottenham Hotspur handed a major blow in their pursuit of Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez.

Tottenham Hotspur urged to sign Inter Milan ace Lautaro Martinez by former Spurs player

Speaking to Football Insider (h/t Express), ex-Tottenham Hotspur star Paul Robinson has urged his former side to sign Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez to bolster their attack, with Harry Kane‘s future at the club uncertain.

Spurs are currently led by Kane in attack, with the Englishman flanked by Son Heung-Min and Dejan Kulusevski on either flank. The trio have gelled well together, despite Kulusevski only joining the squad in January.

Robinson, who won the 2008 League Cup with Tottenham, said that adding Martinez would take his former employers to a different level and that the current front three cannot play every week and need more options to rotate, similar to what Jurgen Klopp has done at Liverpool.

“I think he would take Spurs to a different level. He’s an amazing player. Spurs have a great front three but they cannot play every week. Jurgen Klopp has found that out with his front three. He has five players in rotation for those positions.”

Klopp usually operated with a front three of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah, although he has since added players like Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz to the side to supplement the attack.

“He will want to win titles”

The Lilywhites currently rely on Kane for their goals, with the England skipper coming alive in 2022 under manager Antonio Conte after a slow start to life this season. However, he is the only senior number nine in the team and has no backup striker to support him.

Robinson believed that the England international would not be at the club next season as his aspirations to win titles will not have changed and that bringing in Martinez is perhaps a necessity more than a priority.

“When you talk about Martinez coming in we are assuming that Kane will still be there but I’m not sure he will. His aspirations will not have changed. He has a good relationship with Conte but he will want to win titles.”

Having previously worked with the Argentine, it is said that Conte is keen to reunite with the striker. While at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, the pair won a league title, ending the Nerazzurri’s 11-year trophy drought.

With Martinez having another four years left on his contract with Inter, a move for him may seem unlikely. That being said, he will cost any interested club a transfer price of around £66m, so perhaps the Serie A side may be willing to cash in on the 24-year-old.

Kane meanwhile, will be the subject of transfer speculation once again at the end of the season after nearly sealing a move to Manchester City in the previous summer transfer window. The Spurs ace has never won a trophy in his Tottenham career, and at 28, time may be running out for him to achieve his ambitions.

Conte was brought in earlier this season to help the north London club achieve success and break their long-standing trophy drought. The Italian is famed for winning silverware wherever he has managed, and with a full season at Tottenham coming up next, perhaps Kane may be tempted to stay and see what the ex-Inter boss can achieve.
