Dejan Kulusevski: I wanted to prove people wrong at Tottenham Hotspur after poor Juventus spell
Dejan Kulusevski has expressed that he wanted to prove people wrong at Tottenham Hotspur after his poor spell at Juventus. He has hit the ground running with excellent performances at N17 soon after joining the English side on loan from the Turin based club.
Kulusevski joined Tottenham on an initial 18-month loan deal for a fee worth £8million. There is an option to make the move permanent at the end of this season for around £25million. Tottenham are expected to exercise that clause, considering how much of an impact he has made since joining them. Now, he has revealed the reason that helped him succeed so far at the club.
Speaking in an exclusive interview for the official matchday programme (h/t Tottenham Hotspur official website), the Swede has expressed that his motivation to prove people wrong who raised questions about his quality played a major part in his success so far. He added that such a mindset, coupled with a lack of worry about making mistakes, enabled him to perform to his best so far.
“I think that I wanted to show everybody what I could do. I love proving people wrong, so I was very hungry when I came here. But, still, I knew it would be very, very difficult to arrive in a new league and everything that comes with that. With the coaches, they found the perfect position for me, so I can have the ball a lot, attack the goal and have opportunities to score goals and assist my teammates. I think you can see, when I play, I play freely, without really thinking, without worrying about mistakes, I just play my game.”
Great transfer from Spurs!
Fabio Paratici must be lavished with praise for bringing in the 21-year-old on the deadline day back in January. That transfer business has done wonders for us as the winger’s displays have played a crucial role in our improvement in form in recent weeks.
That has seen us become genuine contenders for finishing in the top four places of the Premier League table. We would not have thought about such an outcome before his arrival as there was considerable work that needed to be done, but Antonio Conte has utilised Kulusevski to help in that regard.
The Juve loanee has scored three goals and assisted six times since his loan move across all competitions so far. That is a great return indeed, which shows how good he has been for us in such a short period of time.

As such, it is not a surprise to see the North Londoners opting to trigger the buy option in the agreement to permanently buy the Sweden international this summer. Now that the attacker has proven his doubters wrong, we hope that he can find a newfound motivation to keep pushing himself to improve further.
That would ensure that all the parties will benefit from this deal moving forward but let’s wait and see whether Kulusevski can continue this run throughout the rest of this campaign or not. We hope that is the case as it would ensure that we can firmly compete for achieving Champions League qualification.
