Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur monitor Leicester City star Youri Tielemans
According to The Times (Subscription Required), Tottenham Hotspur are keeping tabs on Leicester City star Youri Tielemans ahead of the summer transfer window. His future has been surrounded by uncertainty over the past few months which means that a move could potentially take place after this season.
Tottenham are looking to bring in at least one midfielder this summer to strengthen their squad. They want to back Antonio Conte with transfer signings and are monitoring Tielemans’ situation at this moment, along with Brentford’s Christian Eriksen. He could be in line to leave Leicester at the end of this term should he decide to look for a fresh challenge.
The Belgian has a contract with the Foxes until 2023, and an extension is far from being agreed upon right now. He has already expressed that a decision on his future has not been taken just yet but is adamant about playing Champions League football. His entourage has held talks with Arsenal regarding a potential move, indicating the challenge that awaits Spurs.
Good option for Spurs?
The 24-year-old has been a key player for Brendan Rodgers despite their poor run for form since late last season. He is also one of the main cogs of the Belgium side that is going through a transition phase under Roberto Martinez, and football fans would not need reminding of his long-range hit that won Leicester the FA Cup against Chelsea last summer.
The Premier League ace has seven goals and three assists to his name this term from 41 matches across all competitions. But Tielemans is more than just numbers in the form of goals and assists, as he is a calming presence in the Foxes’ midfield who is confident in possession and passes the ball well.
As such, it is good to know that we are keeping an eye out on the Leicester midfielder ahead of the next campaign because, in all honesty, the club can use a quality central midfielder right now. That being said, we need to be wary of the Gunners since they have already approached his representatives.
We cannot allow our bitter rivals to get their hands on the Belgian international in any case. Bringing him to N17 would ensure that we can kill two birds with one stone as we could bolster our ranks while preventing Mikel Arteta’s side from growing stronger as well.
Qualifying for UCL this season would surely boost our chances of signing him. With Tielemans looking for Champions League football, we can receive an advantage in that regard, but it is far from certain at this moment.

Having let Dele Alli leave for Everton in January, Conte brought in Rodrigo Bentancur this January. But Giovani Lo Celso sealing a loan move to Villarreal alongside Tanguy Ndombele’s temporary spell at Lyon this season indicates the level of trust, or the lack of it, from Conte in the midfield duo.
If at all Conte wants Tielemans, the board would be smart to back their manager. But transfer dealings are rarely simple and a lot of factors can play their part for a move to take place or fall apart. Whether Tottenham are willing to put in a concerted effort to sign the Belgian remains to be seen.
