Tottenham Hotspur could sign Inter Milan star Stefan de Vrij on a cut-price deal this summer
According to the Italian publication Tuttosport via Inter-News.it (h/t The Express), Tottenham Hotspur could sign Inter Milan star Stefan de Vrij on a cut-price deal in this summer transfer window. He has found it difficult to get into the starting lineup under Simone Inzaghi, which has resulted in doubts over his future.
De Vrij will enter the final year of his current contract with Inter at the end of this season. There is a belief that both the club and the player would like to part ways with each other in the best interests of all the parties. After all, he has fallen out of favour under Inzaghi and could be deemed dispensable as a result.
The Serie A club would be willing to sell the Dutchman for a valuation of around £16.6million in transfer fees. As such, it appears that an exit is likely to happen this summer but whether Spurs will be his next destination or not remains to be seen. He is hoping that the English side can offer Champions League football if a move is on the cards in the future.
De Vrij still a good choice?
The 30-year-old remains one of the best in his business despite seemingly looking like declining over the past few months. As such, signing the defender must be considered with utmost care as we would not want to invest in someone who is on a downward track.
The Serie A ace has seen his prominence reduced at the Giuseppe Meazza in the second half of this season. The same can be said for his role under Louis van Gaal with the Netherlands national team during this period as well.
However, if Antonio Conte is confident that he can get the best out of the Inter centre-back, then the North Londoners must give him what he wants this summer. However, we must further negotiate and reduce the asking price since De Vrij is nearing the end of his playing career. Moreover, he has not been playing at his best either, which makes it risky to pay that sum.
A centre-back signing can be considered necessary since Conte only has three reliable options in Cristian Romero, Eric Dier and Ben Davies at this moment. One could say that Dier could be replaced with a more quality addition, while Davies is not a natural central defender either.

Hence, De Vrij would certainly have the chance to make a case for himself at N17, unlike his current situation. What’s more, we may also potentially be seeing the end of the road for Joe Rodon and Davinson Sanchez, who have struggled to earn game times for quite some time.
Even Japhet Tanganga could be in a similar boat as mistakes have been a part of his game before he suffered the season-ending blow. As such, it remains to be seen if we would sign De Vrij to cope with these needs or not after this campaign.
