Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur battle Manchester City for Middlesbrough starlet Djed Spence
According to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports on Twitter, Tottenham Hotspur are in line to battle it out with Manchester City to sign Middlesbrough starlet Djed Spence in a potential transfer. He has enjoyed an impressive spell on loan at Nottingham Forest so far, which has resulted in him attracting attention from major clubs across Europe.
Spence has already received five proposals from the interested parties as they try to convince him to join them in the future. Tottenham and Man City are two of the clubs who made the offers, with Arsenal being claimed to be another of the bunch. Bayern Munich are also in the fray, but they have only maintained loose contact with the defender.
However, the Englishman has a desire to don the Manchester United shirt in the future as he is stated to be their fan. That could potentially deal a blow to Spurs’ interest, although it is still unknown whether Man United would look to take advantage of this opportunity at hand.
Spurs to sign Spence?
It is understandable why the 21-year-old is being subjected to interest from some of the top European clubs. After all, the right-back has impressed well by bombing up and down the right flank of the defence. Moreover, the youngster has proven his worth against top teams in the Premier League as well.
Some of the Championship ace’s most notable displays came against the Gunners, Leicester City and Liverpool during Forest’s impressive run in the FA Cup. That shows how the youngster is ready to take the next step to the top flight, which could probably be the reason why clubs are circling for his signature.
What’s more, the asking price of between €12million and €15million remains reasonable despite the demand for the Boro full-back’s services. We must prepare an offensive and push ahead to lead the transfer race now that we have officially made an offer to the young right-back.
However, we must be wary of the Citizens and Mikel Arteta’s side as they have the capabilities to beat us in this pursuit. What’s more, with two other unknown sides also having made offers, we must remain on our toes at all times. Bayern Munchen’s current stance does favour us as they are not actively involved right now.

That being said, Spence being a fan of the Red Devils does cause some worries as it could send a message to our direct rivals. After all, they could use reinforcements in that position next summer.
As for our situation, Matt Doherty has proven his worth under Antonio Conte before suffering an untimely injury. Emerson Royal is a question mark as his offensive qualities have often been non-existent, which could be the reason why we are pursuing Spence. Only time will tell what lies in store for us regarding our pursuit of the Boro starlet.
