Newcastle United eyeing surprise transfer move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg
According to the Express, Newcastle United are preparing a transfer move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the upcoming summer transfer window in order to bolster their midfield.
The Dane has been a regular for Spurs ever since he moved to the club from Southampton, and has provided solidity and stability in the middle of the pitch. Despite playing under three managers during his time in north London, he has remained first-choice in midfield.
This season, he has been paired up with both Oliver Skipp and Rodrigo Bentancur, with the latter becoming his latest partner in midfield after the former is still recovering from a long-standing injury problem.
Under new manager Antonio Conte, the 26-year-old has risen in stature and is looked at as a senior player and leader in the Italian’s squad. It is a testament to how important he is to the first team and has clearly only gone from strength to strength since his move from Southampton.
Newly-rich Magpies keen on Hojbjerg
Despite being a mainstay in the senior side, the Denmark international could find himself cruelly being moved on at the end of the season as Conte is looking to make changes to his squad. The Lilywhites are said to be open to selling Hojbjerg under two conditions – if the offer received for the player was right, and if they can find a replacement for him.
There is certainly interest in the midfielder, as Newcastle are plotting a £30m transfer for Hojbjerg in the summer. Being backed by the uber-rich Saudi Arabian-led consortium, Magpies manager Eddie Howe is keen to strengthen his squad ahead of the new season and has identified the Tottenham star as one of his targets.
It would certainly be a surprise if Newcastle manage to get their man, given how Hojbjerg is a key player for the north London side. He has barely missed a game this season and has proved to be reliable and consistent in midfield, in an otherwise inconsistent campaign for Spurs.
They have run hot and cold all season long, alternating between wins and losses as they look to secure a place in the top four of the Premier League and ensure that they get to play Champions League football next term.

Hojbjerg would be looked at as a key man to help them achieve this objective during the remainder of the campaign, running the show in midfield alongside Bentancur. Despite this, it is curious to hear about the club’s willingness to sell him if they get a good offer for him in the summer.
Until then, all eyes will be on the Dane to deliver for the club as he always has. The Lilywhites face Leicester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal in the coming weeks, and so the midfielder will need to be at his very best to help his side cruise through the remaining fixtures and play European football next season.
