Son Heung-Min hails Tottenham Hotspur newbie Dejan Kulusevski after being impressed with him in training
Speaking to Stadium Astro (h/t Mirror), Tottenham Hotspur ace Son Heung-Min opened up about his opinion about the club’s January signing Dejan Kulusevski, saying the youngster had impressed him in training.
Kulusevski was snapped up by the north London side on deadline day of the winter transfer window from Juventus, joining on an extended loan deal. Since his arrival, the 21-year-old has impressed and established himself in the first team.
Son looked back at the Swede’s first training session, saying that it is never the best feeling training for the first time as a new player because others zoom in on your ability. However, the South Korean was left really impressed with Kulusevski.
“When he trained the first time, it’s obviously not the best feeling because when new players come, you look at it by zooming in. What he’s good at and what he’s not good at. I was really impressed because it was a really good session from him in training.”
The former Juve star moved to north London along with Rodrigo Bentancur, who was also in Turin with the forward. Both players have since become regulars in the first team, impressing manager Antonio Conte in such a short while.
“He’s really enjoying it”
Their ability to settle into England’s top-flight is remarkable, given that it is known for taking no prisoners who are unable to handle the fast-paced nature and the physicality of the game. New signings, whether managers or players, have suffered to adapt in the past. Take, for example, Bryan Gil, who was loaned out back to La Liga this January after being signed from Sevilla just last summer.
Son was particularly impressed with Kulusevski, saying that the Sweden international was enjoying his time in the Premier League and was playing with freedom, despite only joining three months ago. The 29-year-old said that he was still suffering from playing in the toughest league in the world, but it has not affected his new teammate.
“I feel like I am still suffering because it’s the toughest league in the world. But Kulu had adapted really well after three months. Don’t forget, he has only been in the Premier League for three months. He’s really enjoying it and playing with freedom.”
Ever since making his Spurs debut, Kulusevski has been a revelation in the attack. He has formed a formidable partnership up front with Harry Kane and Son, combining well to create chances and score goals.
His form has seen him keep stars like Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn out of the starting lineup at times. This is mighty impressive, given that Moura seemingly had a free run in the team before the Swede’s arrival.

The past few games have seen Kulusevski dip in form, unable to help the team get any shots on target. He cannot be blamed solely for it, as even players like Son and Kane have been underperforming.
With a Champions League qualification spot on the line at the end of the season to fight for, Conte will need the likes of Son and Kulusevski to pick up their socks and find their scoring boots again. Hopefully, we see the duo combine many more times in the remaining games to end the campaign strongly.
