Tottenham Hotspur star Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg suggests that he wants to fight for ‘titles’
While speaking in a conversation with Danny Murphy of the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur star Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg revealed that he is committed to fighting for titles despite the club struggling to do so in recent years.
Despite being one of the ‘big six’ in the Premier League, Tottenham don’t have much to showcase in terms of accolades in recent seasons. Spurs won their last major title back in 2008 when they won the EFL Cup.
A team that reached the final of the Champions League in the 2018/19 season isn’t even competing in the competition currently. They are way behind the Premier League leaders this term and are now trailing Arsenal in the race for the top four. All this while employing arguably one of the greatest strikers the country has ever seen in Harry Kane.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, however, believes he can turn things around. The Danish star talked about his hunger for titles in a conversation with Daily Mail’s Danny Murphy and explained that he wants to end the cycle of Spurs not winning trophies.
“I want to try and play for the big titles. I’m not scared to say when you go to Tottenham; people might not expect you to win things because of recent history. I fully understand that but really want to change the cycle. Also, for my own career, my ambition, I want to fight.”
The Spurs midfielder revealed that he plays for the team and that while he may not make the big headlines, he knows that he can compete with just about anyone out there on the pitch. No lies there, as the ex-Southampton star is one of the finest defensive midfielders in the PL right now.
“You don’t associate my style with big headlines, but my contribution is for the team. One thing I know I can do is compete with anyone because it’s in my blood. I like to push everyone, starting with myself, to the limit.”
Can Tottenham Hotspur win a title?
The Dane has made 43 appearances this season, scoring 3 goals and providing four assists. His partnership with Oliver Skipp became the core of Antonio Conte’s team, at least in the starting stages of his managerial spell.
Hojbjerg’s fighting spirit is a crucial element that Conte would surely appreciate. The Italian manager likes to show that passion on the touchline and undoubtedly demands his players to give it their all on the pitch- something Hojbjerg does week in, week out.
After the arrival of the former Inter Milan manager, things have changed in the club. Gruelling training sessions and strict schedules have been testing the players’ mentality. Rodrigo Bentancur’s arrival in midfield this January was a welcome addition, but the Uruguayan was never going to replace our trusted Dane.
Instead, the ex-Juventus man has now found himself paired up with Hojbjerg in the middle of the park on most occasions. Even though Spurs haven’t won anything this term, they have shown impressive performances in important competitions, including reaching the semi-final of the Carabao Cup while also putting in a charge for the UCL spots in the Premier League.
Although they are far from a team that could compete for the Premier League title right now, improvements have come, and they could continue growing to a top team under the leadership of the Italian manager.
